DTN News - September 9, 2011: AFGHANISTAN-US-ATTACKS-911-HERAT A combo of pictures created on September 9, 2011 shows (top) Northern Alliance soldiers (mujahedeen) posing for a picture on an old artillery piece in front of the police headquarters in the western Afghan city of Herat on November 15, 2001 just three days after Taliban left the city and (bottom) Afghan policemen posing with the cannon in the same place just under eight years later on August 23, 2009. September 11, 2011 marks the 10-year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks in New York which prompted the US-led invasion of Afghanistan less than a month later. The US-led campaign working with the Northern Alliance was designed to topple the Taliban and ensure Al-Qaeda could no longer use Afghanistan as a safe haven. 10 years on Herat, close to the Afghan border with Iran, is seen as one of the safest parts of Afghanistan and was among the first wave of seven places that passed from foreign to Afghan security control in July, 2011.
