AgustaWestland and GE launch advanced technology on AW139

Defense News:
SOUTHAMPTON, England--(BUSINESS WIRE)--GE Aviation today announced the launch of the first proven web-based health and usage monitoring system utilizing GE Advanced Anomaly Detection (AAD) technology. The system is introduced with AgustaWestland, a Finmeccanica company, on the AW139 to further enhance its global Customer Support Services.

“This application of our Advanced Anomaly Detection technology brings about one of the most significant changes in HUMS effectiveness in the last 20 years,” said Chris Beaufait, president of Avionics for GE Aviation Systems. “Operators are able to monitor fleet trending and detect anomalies earlier and with greater confidence as this technology provides higher fidelity interpretation of all data. This is a major step forward since GE produced the first certified HUMS in 1991.”

The AW139 HUMS Web Services package features dedicated data transmission software and website as well as the Advanced Anomaly Detection technology. The new data transmission software allows a quicker and smarter 24/7 web link between the customer base and the central data repository, which is automatically updated. The helicopter health status can be updated wherever internet access is available.

“The advanced anomaly detection technology provides a simple set of indicators for the operator’s technical staff, enabling more efficient data analysis,” said Marco Sala, AgustaWestland Senior Vice President Customer Support & Services Italy. “This allows easier and more efficient maintenance activities on AW139 transmission components, in addition to reduced workload and increased fleet operational effectiveness.”

GE’s artificial intelligence based AAD technology is the first of its type to have been successfully proven through comprehensive in-service trials. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) sponsored the trials conducted with Bristow Helicopters.

The new HUMS Web Services were presented to a number of AW139 operators during the AW139 HUMS Operators Conference held in Vergiate (Italy) on April 8th and 9th. By this innovative data monitoring approach, the AW139 operators can easily manage the automated transmission of health and usage data collected during operations, enabling highly flexible and rapid sharing with AgustaWestland Customer Support & Services.

Notes to Editors:

Web-based health usage and monitoring system

How it works:

  • Data is automatically acquired and analyzed using sophisticated algorithms that can diagnose and detect problems on the aircraft. This data is processed by an on-board health management unit then stored before being downloaded on the ground.
  • Data downloaded from the aircraft is automatically transferred to a central repository for more in depth processing and trending on a fleet-wide basis.
  • The resultant information is then available to operators and OEMs via a web interface, providing visibility into potential problems to assist troubleshooting anywhere in the world.

GE Aviation Completes Second GPS-Independent Navigation System Flight Test for Automated Aerial Refueling Applications

Defense News ~ GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.--February 4, 2010, (BUSINESS WIRE)--GE Aviation successfully completed a second flight test of its Electro-Optical Grid Reference System (EOGRS) in support of future automated aerial refueling applications in late December 2009. This activity further expands the EOGRS operational envelope and demonstrated performance enhancements beyond those which were successfully achieved during the first flight test conducted in late July 2009.
"These flight tests confirm the viability of our technology for aerial refueling drogue stabilization and tanker-relative navigation, including in a GPS-denied scenario,” said Stuart Mullan, president, Military Business for GE Aviation Systems. “This is the second successful airborne test of proprietary GE laser-grid technology and the wealth of data that was gathered confirms robustness and field of view improvements over the first flight.”
This second flight test enabled GE to confirm refinements made to the grid navigation system transmitter and detectors. An Omega Aerial Refueling Services Inc K-707 tanker was again used for the flight test. It was modified by adding GE’s EOGRS transmitter and a form, fit, and function replacement US/NATO MA-3 refueling drogue with EOGRS detectors.
This flight test provides high fidelity refueling drogue motion and position data, allowing GE to validate EOGRS navigation accuracy, integrity, continuity and availability.
Advances in automated aerial refueling technology, such as GE’s EOGRS, will increase the safety of manned refueling as well as facilitate unmanned refueling operations. This technology is a key enabler of persistent, world-wide aerial refueling operations. In addition, EOGRS solves the complex portion of the automated refueling equation by providing a system capable of performing terminal guidance between the tanker and receiver aircraft. The GE EOGRS tanker-relative navigation system is on a path toward certification as a sole and/or supplemental means of navigation.
