Blending of Camelina Oil and Coal To Create Montana-Based Biojet Fuel

Defense News: CINCINNATI, March 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Camelina oil and domestic coal will soon be blended to create clean biojet fuel using coal-biomass-to-liquids technology (CBTL), thanks to an agreement between Accelergy Corporation and Great Plains - The Camelina Company.

"This will be a great plus for Montana, and is another step on our way to energy independence," said GovernorBrian Schweitzer.

Montana has the potential for hundreds of thousands of acres of Camelina and the State has a coal reserve of 120 billion tons. By blending Camelina oil and liquefied coal, Montana stands to gain on multiple fronts -- utilization of the coal reserves for high-value biojet fuel, local growth of Camelina for the combined CBTL process, and installation of oil seed crushing and advanced biofuel production facilities; all creating new jobs in the state.

"This teaming gives Great Plains the ability to significantly impact the jet fuel market with domestically sourced biojet fuel ... and do it today," said Sam Huttenbauer, CEO of Great Plains Oil & Exploration - The Camelina Company. "It will help fill the gap in low-cost biofuel availability from domestic sources as we expand the production of Camelina in North America."

The aviation industry is demonstrating its desire for biojet fuel with the certification of biofuels on regular commercial flights expected in 2012, the Air Force's target to use 50% domestic jet fuel by 2016, and the European Union's mandate that transportation fuels consist of 10 percent biofuel by 2020.

"To date, there has been limited construction of facilities capable of producing these synthetic fuels in commercial quantities," said Dr. Rocco Fiato, VP of Business Development and Planning at Accelergy. "The slow adoption and construction of these facilities is the result of the need for technological improvements in synthetic fuel production processes."

CBTL begins with transforming raw material into feedstock through a gasification process. The feedstock is then turned to fuel using a liquefaction process that requires thermal and catalytic reactions. Accelergy's CBTL process provides 20% lower CO2 emissions than conventional refining methods, resulting in cleaner burning fuel and more efficient engines.

Through this agreement, Accelergy will use Great Plains Camelina oil blended with its liquefied coal to create a fully synthetic jet fuel otherwise indistinguishable from standard petroleum fuel.

"Using Camelina will not only prove-out the technology on a commercial scale, but also provide meaningful quantities of the end-product biojet fuel for Air Force use," said Dr. Fiato.

The technology has been proven at laboratory and small scale pilot projects. This agreement helps fulfill the next required step of commercial demonstration and greatly accelerates the scale-up.

North Atlantic Industries Introduces an Isolated, Four Channel, Programmable Counter, Quadrature and SSI Encoder Controller

Defense News: BOHEMIA, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--North Atlantic Industries (NAI) announces the availability of a Counter, Quadrature and SSI Encoder Controller interface module for its wide range of OpenVPX, VME, cPCI and PCI Multifunction boards. Known as the E7, it joins an extensive list of functions that are available from NAI. The E7 provides four (4) independent, fully isolated channels, each programmable as an SSI interface controller, an SSI “Listen Only” mode receiver, an incremental encoder reader, a Quadrature encoder counter or a general purpose counter. The E7 utilizes state-of-the-art galvanic isolation that is superior to alternative opto-coupler devices, therefore eliminating concerns about uncertain current transfer ratios, non-linear transfer functions and temperature/lifetime degradation effects.

“The E7 counter/encoder module integrates positional or timing sensor interfaces for embedded and test sensor systems” said Lino Massafra, VP of Sales and Marketing at NAI. “This new Encoder counter adds additional capability to our already extensive library of I/O functions for our multifunction boards.

Multifunction Boards eliminate the need for specialized, single function boards by providing an assortment of communication and I/O functions on a single card. This unique board architecture allows the user to mix-and-match a variety of functions to meet their specific requirements.

The multifunction approach offers higher functional density, reduced board count, lower heat dissipation and increased system reliability. Other available functions include A/D, D/A, Discrete I/O, TTL/CMOS, Differential Transceiver, Synchro/Resolver/LVDT/RVDT Simulation and Measurement, ARINC429/575, CANBus, MIL-STD-1553, Synchronous/Asynchronous RS232/422/485, Reference Generator and Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTD).

A Software Support Kit is supplied with all NAI Multifunction Boards for use in multiple OS platforms, such as Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista/7, Linux, VxWorks and other RTOS (LynxOS, Windows CE). Pricing for 100 pieces of the 64C2 VME Board with 4 channels of Encoder/SSI support starts at $2880. Delivery is 10 to 12 weeks, ARO.

Wall Street down after Portugal credit rating cut

Defense News: NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks fell on Wednesday after Portugal's credit rating was downgraded on budget concerns, prompting investors to pull back after recent gains.

Markets took little direction after mixed economic reports, with data showing new home sales falling to a record low in February, while new orders for long-lasting manufactured goods rose for the third straight month in February and inventories posted their biggest gain since December 2008.

Portugal's downgrade jarred European markets as Greece's debt problems has dominated the spotlight. Shares in Europe were knocked lower and carried through to the United States.

"Investors have to be aware they're going to keep getting reminded that there are some sovereign debt issues that could (have an) impact. It's not all rosy," said Kurt Brunner, portfolio manager at Swarthmore Group in Philadelphia.

"The market's been pretty strong over the last couple weeks, so you're seeing a bit of a trade-off."

The Dow Jones industrial average (^DJI - News) slipped 15.04 points, or 0.14 percent, to 10,873.79. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index (^SPX - News) was off 1.70 points, or 0.14 percent, to 1,172.47. The Nasdaq Composite Index (^IXIC - News) lost 8.36 points, or 0.35 percent, to 2,406.88.

The Dow fared better than the other major indexes, boosted by Boeing Co (BA - News), which rose 1 percent to $72.90 after a brokerage raised its rating to "outperform" from "neutral.

Utilities shares sagged with Exelon Corp (EXC - News) down 1.2 percent at $43.79 after Goldman Sachs cut its price target to $50 from $52. The brokerage cut its view on independent power producers and diversified utilities to "neutral" from "attractive.

Stocks pushed to 18-month highs on Tuesday, with the Dow racking up a 10th day of gains out of the past 11 sessions. For the month so far, the broad S&P 500 is up about 6 percent.
