Smiths Detection Launches BIO-ACT, a Complete Solution for Emergency Response BWA Threat Assessment

Tactical Detection Approach for Safe, Quick Identification of Unknown Substances
Defense News ~ DANBURY, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Smiths Detection today launches BIO-ACT, a complete emergency response assessment solution for rapidly identifying Biological Warfare Agents (BWAs) in the field. BIO-ACT comprises four complementary technologies, giving emergency responders a complete toolkit to obtain the highest level of accuracy when assessing unknown powder scares for Anthrax, Ricin, Plague, Pan Orthopox and other BWAs.

BIO-ACT, which stands for biological advanced confirmatory technologies, consists of Prime Alert™, a microbe and toxin screener, BioCheck®, a protein and pH test kit, HazMatID Ranger™, a hand-held chemical identifier and Bio-Seeq PLUS™, a next-generation handheld BWA identifier. Each element provides unique identification and detection capabilities that allow emergency responders to quickly determine any threat level and make the appropriate public safety decisions.

Mal Maginnis, President, Global Military and Emergency Responders for Smiths Detection, said: “We are committed to delivering this advanced tactical assessment approach worldwide because it provides emergency responders with the highest degree of confidence when dealing with unknown, suspect substances. BIO-ACT strongly reinforces our position as a total solutions provider for quick and accurate biological threat assessment. This is critical because no single test is enough when you are dealing with a potential BWA.”

The complementary technologies are:

Prime Alert, a portable detection system that quickly determines the presence of potentially life-threatening microbes associated with anthrax and plague as well as bio-toxins such as ricin and botulinum by providing a highly-accurate broad-spectrum analysis.

BioCheck, a patented and easy-to-use screening kit that combines a ‘best in class’ protein assay with a pH test to rapidly assess suspicious powders representing potential biological threats.

HazMatID Ranger, a handheld detection system specifically designed for diverse field applications requiring broad portability capable of identifying more than 32,000 unknown solids and liquids including white powders, WMDs, explosives and toxic industrial chemicals.

Bio-Seeq PLUS, a biological testing unit designed for global military and emergency response applications that provides on-site detection and identification of trace amounts of BWAs such as Anthrax, Tularemia, Plague and Pan Orthopox.

The Bio-Act toolkit will be demonstrated at PITTCON 2010 in Orlando, Fla. from February 28 to March 5 at Smiths Detections’ booth, #668.
