Micrel Introduces New Gigabit PHY for Embedded Ethernet

Low Power Consumption, High Integration and Small Size Targets "Green" Systems

Defense News: SAN JOSE, CA--(Marketwire - 03/22/10) - Micrel Inc., (NASDAQ:MCRL - News), an industry leader in analog, high bandwidth communications and Ethernet IC solutions, today announced the KSZ9021GN and KSZ9021RN, two new single-port 10/100/1000Base-T Gigabit transceivers that support data transfer over a standard CAT-5 unshielded twisted pair cable. The solutions are ideal for enabling green system designs and Gigabit Ethernet performance in Home, Industrial, SOHO and SMB applications, such as set top boxes, broadband gateways, media converters and IP devices for voice and video. Volume quantities are currently available. For specific pricing, please contact your local Micrel sales office. Samples can be ordered at: http://www.micrel.com/ProductList.do.

"Micrel's Ethernet products have been a key enabler in the broad adoption of Ethernet in the Digital Home and Industrial segments," noted Wiren Perera, Micrel's director of Ethernet Products. "Increasing performance demands for these applications necessitate migration to higher speeds so Micrel is now delivering Gigabit solutions with lower power, smaller size and reduced emissions -- all comprising the same high Micrel standards in quality and reliability. Micrel's KSZ9021 series also features a unique level of integration which, combined with low power and size, makes these solutions ideal for Green systems."

The high level of on-chip integration in the KSZ9021 series results in reduced system bill of materials, simplified hardware design, improved signal integrity and reduced emissions. Termination resistors and LDO controller, along with built-in diagnostic features, are just some of the integrated functions that significantly reduce the cost and the complexity of Gigabit Ethernet applications. Specifically, the on-chip termination eliminates eight external termination resistors. The 10/100/1000Base-T IEEE802.3-compliant transceivers feature RGMII (KSZ9021RN) and GMII (KSZ9021GN) interfaces. The ICs also offer LinkMD® cable diagnostics that support quick resolution of common cabling problems and reduce network downtime. Automatic MD/MDIX crossover support eliminates the need for a cross-over cable, thus reducing installation costs. The devices will be available for both commercial and industrial temperature ranges. The commercial range is currently available and the industrial range will be introduced in the first quarter of 2010.
