 (NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - February 25, 2012: India detained Italian marines for shooting two Indian fishermen to death in Kochi, India, Sunday, Feb. 19, 2012. Latorre Massimiliano  and Salvatore Girone, members of the navy security team (marines) of  Napoli registered Italian merchant vessel Enrica Lexie, are taken for interrogation by the Indian police in the southern Indian city of Kochi February 19, 2012. 
Two fishermen were killed when a navy security team (marines) on an Italian merchant vessel opened fire on a boat it mistook for pirates at sea off the coast of Kerala, officials said on Thursday. A case of murder has been registered against the crew, said a senior official at Neendakara Coastal police station, where surviving fishermen sought help.

Italy Asks for marines’ Release.

Italian diplomats on Thursday asked a court to release two Italian marines charged with killing two Indian fishermen. The Indian police say the marines shot at an unarmed fishing boat last week as the oil tanker they were on, the Enrica Lexie, passed the Indian coast. Italian diplomats say the marines, who were acting as guards on the Italian-flagged merchant ship, fired only warning shots and did so in international waters. Indian officials have said the dead fishermen are Indian, which gives them jurisdiction to prosecute the case.

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - February 25, 2012: Oshkosh Defense, a division of Oshkosh Corporation (NYSE:OSK), and the U.S. military have reached a significant milestone in the ongoing battle against improvised explosive devices (IED) in Afghanistan, having recently completed the in-theater installation of the 3,500th Oshkosh MRAP All-Terrain Vehicle (M-ATV) Underbody Improvement Kit (UIK) in less than seven months to give Warfighters new levels of protection against the threats.
In response to larger IEDs, Oshkosh worked closely with the MRAP Joint Program Office (JPO) to design and deliver the first M-ATV UIK in less than 30 days. The kits increase the M-ATV’s protection level beyond the initial requirements and are part of Oshkosh’s comprehensive strategy to help keep Warfighters safer on the battlefield without limiting mission-critical off-road mobility.

“Oshkosh Defense uses a modular approach to vehicle design, allowing the M-ATV and several other fielded platforms to accept a wide range of upgrades in-theater as threats evolve,” said John Bryant, vice president and general manager of Joint and Marine Corps Programs for Oshkosh Defense. “We design UIKs and test them thoroughly to meet the government’s stringent survivability requirements. Our Field Service Representatives then go wherever needed, including in-theater, to install the kits in rapid fashion.”

In addition to the M-ATV, Oshkosh produces UIKs to enhance protection for other vehicle platforms. The U.S. Army to date has ordered more than 400 UIKs, also known as C-Kit armor, for the Oshkosh Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck (HEMTT) A4.

Oshkosh is also developing and conducting independent testing of UIK enhancements for its wide range of light, medium and heavy tactical wheeled vehicle platforms, including the Army’s Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles (FMTV).
Urgent In-Theater Installation


The MRAP JPO established 10 UIK installation sites in Afghanistan, while Oshkosh designed the lean process flow and specified, procured, packaged and delivered the tooling required to support the installations. Working together, the MRAP JPO’s universal workforce and Oshkosh installed the first 3,500 UIKs in less than seven months. Oshkosh to date has received orders for more than 8,000 M-ATV UIKs and continues to install the kits in-theater. 

The Oshkosh UIKs take advantage of the M-ATV’s flexible design and industry-leading suspension system to accept additional armor. Similar to the M-ATV’s bolt-on armor, UIKs can be installed in-theater without the need for welding or major fabrication.

U.S. military technicians in Afghanistan have also installed 400 UIKs for a total of more than 3,900 M-ATVs with greater protection levels in-theater to date. Additionally, Oshkosh delivered more than 500 new M-ATVs with factory-installed UIKs.

 (NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - February 24, 2012: The Boeing [NYSE: BA] KC-46 Tanker program today marked the first anniversary of receiving a U.S. Air Force contract to build the next-generation aerial refueling tanker, the KC-46A. Over the past year, the program has completed key milestones in support of the design and development phase on or ahead of schedule, and is now preparing for a Preliminary Design Review (PDR) in March.
"The KC-46 program is on a good path. Boeing's performance thus far has been solid," said Maj. Gen. Chris Bogdan, KC-46 Program Executive Officer, U.S. Air Force. "Our commitment is to deliver the KC-46A to the nation's warfighters, on schedule and ready to go to war on Day One, as the world's most advanced tanker. I'm pleased to report that Boeing is meeting its commitments."
Since receiving the contract on Feb. 24, 2011, the Boeing KC-46 team has completed several major milestones, including a System Requirements Review, Integrated Baseline Review, 767-2C PDR, and Firm Configuration Reviews for the 767-2C and the KC-46A Tanker.
"I'm very proud of our joint team," said Maureen Dougherty, Boeing KC-46 Tanker vice president and program manager. "We're drawing on the best of Boeing's industry-leading commercial airplane and defense expertise as we design and develop the KC-46A, which is a next-generation derivative aircraft. We remain on plan to deliver the first 18 combat-ready tankers by 2017."
The PDR, which will ensure that Boeing's design meets system requirements, will be followed by a Critical Design Review (CDR) in the third quarter of 2013. The CDR determines that the design of the KC-46A is mature and ready to proceed to the manufacturing phase of the program.
Boeing will build 179 next-generation aerial refueling tanker aircraft that will begin to replace the Air Force's fleet of 416 KC-135 tankers. Based on the proven Boeing 767 commercial airplane, the KC-46A tanker is a widebody, multi-mission aircraft updated with the latest and most advanced technology to meet the demanding mission requirements of the future, including a digital flight deck featuring Boeing 787 Dreamliner electronic displays and a flight control design philosophy that places aircrews in command to maximize combat maneuverability. The KC-46A also features a modernized KC-10 boom with a fly-by-wire control system, and a refueling envelope and fuel offload rate that is greater than the KC-135 it will replace.
