First Boeing Next-Generation 737 with Goodrich DURACARB(R) Carbon Brakes Enters Service with Arrival of flydubai's Seventh Aircraft

Defense News ~ CHARLOTTE, N.C., March 15, 2010 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The first Boeing Next-Generation 737 aircraft equipped with Goodrich Corporation (NYSE:GR - News) DURACARB® carbon brakes has been delivered to flydubai, Dubai's first low cost airline. This is the seventh Next-Generation 737 the airline has received in less than 10 months of commercial operations. Goodrich will supply wheels and carbon brake equipment for flydubai's entire fleet of more than 50 Boeing Next-Generation 737-800 aircraft and will retrofit the airline's existing six aircraft.

The wheels and carbon brakes will provide a weight savings of approximately 700 pounds (318 kg) per airplane compared to high capacity steel brakes, and 550 pounds (250 kg) compared to standard capacity steel brakes. In addition to the fuel cost savings from the reduced weight, the Goodrich DURACARB® carbon brake also offers airlines significantly higher brake life compared to steel brakes.

Jim Wharton, vice president of sales and program management for Goodrich Aircraft Wheels and Brakes, said "Goodrich is now able to offer a carbon brake option for all models of the Boeing Next Generation 737 platform. Airlines have expressed great interest in our carbon brake option due to the lower weight and resulting fuel burn reduction. Our DURACARB® carbon material continues to demonstrate superior brake life performance on other in-service programs and we now look forward to providing the same benefit to new and existing 737 Next Generation operators."

Ghaith al Ghaith, Chief Executive Officer of flydubai, said, "We believe that we are setting a new standard by being the first airline using Boeing Next-Generation 737 aircraft to receive Goodrich's carbon brakes. The many advantages of using these brakes will enable us to keep our costs low and make savings which we can pass onto our customers. The on time delivery of this new aircraft also marks the arrival of flydubai's seventhBoeing Next-Generation 737-800 in a span of just 10 months since we started commercial flights. It also ensures we can keep the expansion of the airline on track with the start of services to our 12th and 13th destinations, Muscat, Oman and Kuwait City, Kuwait."

Owned by the government of Dubai, flydubai is Dubai's first low cost airline and started commercial flights onJune 1, 2009. The airline already operates six Boeing Next-Generation 737 aircraft on 11 routes, making it one of the fastest growing start-up airlines in the world. SpaceX says Falcon 9 rocket test fire is a success

SpaceX Falcon 9

* Debut flight of private rocket could be this spring

* SpaceX, Orbital to resupply space station for NASA

* Passenger space flight services also among plans (Adds time frame for next launch, paras 11-12)

By Irene Klotz

Defense News ~ CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla., March 14 (Reuters) - Space Exploration Technologies successfully test fired its Falcon 9 rocket this weekend, clearing a milestone toward the inaugural flight of a privately developed spaceship to fly cargo, and possibly astronauts, into orbit, the company said.

Saturday's 3.5-second 'static' firing of the Falcon's nine kerosene and liquid oxygen-burning motors took place on a refurbished oceanside launch pad at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. It followed an earlier firing test aborted last week due to an improperly configured valve.

The successful test by California-based SpaceX clears the way for Falcon 9's debut mission -- a demonstration flight which could take place as early as April 12 from the same launch site, just south of the space shuttle launch pads at the Kennedy Space Center.

President Barack Obama has proposed adding $6 billion to space agency NASA's budget over the next five years to help private firms like SpaceX develop spaceships that can ferry astronauts to and from the International Space Station, which he wants to continue until at least 2020.

With the NASA shuttle fleet retiring due to safety and cost concerns, the U.S. agency has turned over space station crew transport to the Russian government at a cost of about $51 million per seat.

Obama plans to hold a summit in Florida next month to discuss the U.S. space plans and industry.

SpaceX, owned and operated by Internet entrepreneur Elon Musk, already holds NASA contracts worth nearly $1.9 billion to develop and fly Falcon 9 rockets and Dragon capsules for space station cargo resupply missions.

Virginia-based Orbital Sciences Corp (ORB.N) has NASA contracts of similar value for its Taurus II-Cygnus system, which is scheduled to debut next year.

SpaceX says it needs about three years to develop a launch escape system for Dragon and other upgrades to have Falcon 9 ready for passenger service.

"What we are going through right now is the equivalent of 'beta testing'," Musk, SpaceX's founder and chief executive, wrote in an email after last week's aborted test. "The beta phase only ends when a rocket has done at least one, but arguably two or three consecutive flights to orbit," he said.

With its FAA license to launch granted last week, SpaceX is just awaiting clearance from the Air Force for Falcon 9's emergency abort system, which would be used to terminate the launch if the rocket strayed from its projected fight path and threatened populated areas.

"As soon as the tests are complete and (Air Force) has signed off, we will launch," said Musk. (Editing by Pascal Fletcher and Todd Eastham)

Boeing, Qatar Emiri Air Force Laud C-17 Fleet's Achievements

Defense News ~ DOHA, Qatar, March 15, 2010 -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] and the Qatar Emiri Air Force (QEAF) celebrated Qatar's deployment of C-17 Globemaster III airlifters during an Air Force Day ceremony held March 10 at Doha International Airport.

"When the Qatar Emiri Air Force acquired two C-17s last year, we did so with every intention of supporting international disaster-relief and humanitarian missions around the world," said Brig. Gen. Ahmed Al-Malki, head of Qatar's airlift selection committee. "We take great pride in being among the first of many nations to respond to Haiti and Chile, delivering several thousand tons of food, water and medical supplies."

Just days after Haiti was struck by an earthquake on Jan. 12, a Qatar C-17 delivered aid to the country's capital, Port-au-Prince. On March 4, Qatar sent a C-17 filled with humanitarian aid to Chile in response to that country's Feb. 27 earthquake.

"It is with great appreciation that on Air Force Day we salute the Qatar Emiri Air Force and its leadership for the many important contributions they are making right now in Chile and Haiti," said Chris Chadwick, president, Boeing Military Aircraft. "Boeing employees everywhere were extremely moved to see Qatar's C-17s bringing hope to those in need, and joining so many other nations on lifesaving missions. We're proud that the C-17, with its reputation for reliability and maintainability, is serving your nation, and the people of Chile and Haiti, so well."

Boeing delivered Qatar's first C-17 on Aug. 11 and the second on Sept. 10. Qatar, the first Middle East nation to order the C-17, signed an agreement with Boeing on July 21, 2008, for the two advanced airlifters and associated equipment and services, as well as an option for two additional aircraft. The company provides Qatar's C-17s with operational support, including material management and depot maintenance support, under the C-17 Globemaster III Sustainment Partnership at Al Udeid Air Base, where the QEAF's C-17s are based.

"The Qatar Emiri Air Force's acquisition of the C-17 is a testament to Qatar's laudable and growing role in humanitarian relief around the world," said Paul Kinscherff, president, Boeing Middle East. "Boeing is pleased to be a partner to the State of Qatar as it builds humanitarian capabilities, a global air transport hub, and its role in the aerospace industry."

A total of 214 C-17s are currently in service worldwide. Nineteen of the airlifters are in service with international customers, while the U.S. Air Force, including active Guard and Reserve units, has 195. International customers include Qatar, the United Kingdom's Royal Air Force, the Canadian Forces, the Royal Australian Air Force and the 12-member Strategic Airlift Capability consortium of NATO and Partnership for Peace nations. The United Arab Emirates is on contract for six C-17s, which it will receive in 2011 and 2012.

UPDATE 4-United Tech sees double-digit 2010 profit growth

united-technologies-to-buy-ges-security-division-for-1-82-billion-utx-ge

* Sees EPS $4.40-$4.65

* Hamilton Sundstrand outlook up, Otis down

* Shares down 1 pct (Adds CEO quotes, paragraphs 6-7, 15)

By Scott Malone

Defense News ~ NEW YORK, March 12 (Reuters) - United Technologies Corp (UTX.N) confirmed it expects 2010 profit growth of 7 percent to 13 percent, saying a better outlook at its Hamilton Sundstrand aircraft unit would help offset headwinds at Otis elevator.

The diversified U.S. manufacturer said gains in China, which has pulled out of a global economic slump far faster than the United States, and the effects of aggressive cost-cutting last year would allow it to return to a growth footing.

"We are very well positioned for 2010," Chief Executive Louis Chenevert said in a meeting with analysts on Friday. "We're well positioned for sustainable double-digit earnings growth."

The world's largest maker of elevators and air conditioners reiterated its 2010 forecast, first issued in December, of profit of $4.40 per share to $4.65 per share on revenue of $54 billion to $55 billion.

Analysts, on average, expect $4.63 per share on revenue of $54.8 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

The company is starting to see demand pick up in its shorter-cycle businesses, such as Carrier air conditioners, which are ordered closer to delivery than, say, jet engines.

"Markets, especially our short-cycle businesses, are starting to resume momentum," Chenevert told reporters. That recovery could bring "modest" worldwide inflation in materials prices in the coming years, he added.

Hamilton Sundstrand's raised outlook reflects higher profit margins after a year of cost-cutting.

Otis faces weak demand for elevators in its home North American market, though executives said Western Europe is showing signs of stabilization and Chinese demand has recovered.

Shares of Hartford, Connecticut-based United Tech were down less than 1 percent at $71.46 in afternoon trading on the New York Stock Exchange. Over the past year, the blue-chip shares have gained 76 percent, outpacing the 48 percent rise in the Dow Jones industrial average .DJI.

FOCUS ON EMERGING MARKETS

Major U.S. industrials, including United Tech, General Electric Co (GE.N) and Caterpillar Inc (CAT.N), are navigating what thus far has been an uncertain economic recovery in the United States after a brutal downturn, and are counting on quicker growth outside the United States to offset sluggish demand at home.

Carrier's chief, Geraud Darnis, said U.S. demand for residential heating and cooling systems -- which was pounded by the prolonged housing slump -- appears to have bottomed out. [ID:N12140164]

United Tech at the start of this month closed its $1.8 billion acquisition of GE's security products business, its first large deal since Chenevert, 52, was named chairman on Jan. 1, ending a four-year transition of power from George David.

The company is interested in making additional acquisitions in the security and aerospace maintenance sectors but will primarily focus on smaller deals that could boost sales in key emerging markets, including China and India. It is unlikely to do another deal on the scale of GE Security in the near future, Chenevert said.

"I don't see big transactions at this point," Chenevert said.

United Tech's competitors include Eurocopter, a unit of EADS (EAD.PA), in helicopters; GE in jet engines; and ThyssenKrupp AG (TKAG.DE) in elevators.

The company, which also makes Pratt & Whitney jet engines and Black Hawk military helicopters, said on Wednesday that its board had authorized it to buy back to up to 60 million of its shares, worth about $4.3 billion at current prices. It aims to repurchase about $1.5 billion of stock this year. (Reporting by Scott Malone; editing by Gerald E. McCormick, John Wallace, Phil Berlowitz)
