GE Fanuc Intelligent Platforms Secures 3U VPX Order From General Dynamics Land Systems

Abrams Evolutionary Design program to provide more rugged computing power in smaller space
GE Fanuc Intelligent Platforms ~ September 21, 2009
General Electric Co.
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--GE Fanuc Intelligent Platforms, a unit of GE Enterprise Solutions, today announced that it had secured an order from General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS) of Sterling Heights, MI for 3U VPX single board computers, graphics processors, disk subsystems and switches in support of GDLS’s work on the Abrams Evolutionary Design (AED) program for the M1A2 tank. The AED is the design development program for future Abrams tank computer systems and will see the gradual replacement of 6U VME-based systems supplied by GE Fanuc to GDLS for the Abrams Continuous Electronics Enhancement Program (CEEP) and System Enhancement Program (SEP V2). The AED program is expected to be at least equal to the scope and value of the CEEP program.
Importantly, all these GE Fanuc products comply with the REDI (Ruggedized Enhanced Design Implementation) VITA 48 standard. The REDI/VITA 48 standard provides guidelines that enable designers to develop boards that are capable of operation in the harsh environments typical of military operations. They also provide the Army with a Line Replaceable Module (LRM) solution that makes Level Two Maintenance possible, insuring faster, more cost-effective repair and replacement in the field – a key requirement for the armed forces.
“The requirement for the Abrams Evolutionary Design is to provide the tank with significantly greater computing power but with a smaller footprint, allowing even more capabilities to be built in to the Abrams’ confined space,” said Peter Cavill, General Manager, Military & Aerospace at GE Fanuc Intelligent Platforms. “Our 3U VPX solution allows this to be possible. We have a long history with GDLS and the highly successful CEEP program, and our hope is that our two companies can continue to work together to make the AED program equally successful.”
The order from GDLS includes the following GE Fanuc products:
*SBC310 3U VPX Freescale Power Architecture 8641D single board computer
*SBC340 3U VPX Intel Core™2 Duo single board computer
*GRA110 3U VPX NVIDIA G73 graphics processor
*PEX430 3U VPX PCI Express switch and PMC/XMC carrier
*GBX410 3U VPX 16-port Gigabit Ethernet switch
*SDD910 3U VPX solid state SATA disk module

Manhattan Scientifics, Inc. Announces Exclusive License with Carpenter Technology Corporation

Carpenter Plans to Manufacture & Market Super Strong Metals Utilizing the Patented Manhattan System
Manhattan Scientifics Inc. ~ September 21, 2009,
Carpenter Technology Corp.
Manhattan Scientifics, Inc.
LOS ALAMOS, N.M. and READING, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Manhattan Scientifics, Inc. (OTCBB: MHTX - News) announced the signing of a contract with Carpenter Technology Corporation (NYSE: CRS - News), wherein Carpenter will fully develop, manufacture and market a new class of high strength metals under an exclusive license from Manhattan Scientifics and the Los Alamos National Laboratory. The contract includes minimum annual payments to Manhattan Scientifics during a 4-year period, together with royalty payments as a percent of gross sales.
Manhattan Scientifics previously acquired the exclusive perpetual U.S. license to a family of patents that have been developed by scientists at the Los Alamos National Laboratory and in Russia.
The proprietary process will enable super-strength metals and alloys to make products that weigh far less than in the past and without significant cost premiums. A patented new form of titanium metal originally developed by Russian scientists, in concert with scientists at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, is expected initially to significantly improve medical prosthetics. Studies have shown that bone integrates with these new metals up to 20 times faster than with conventional metals. In December 2008, FDA approval was received for the $2 billion dental implant market. Carpenter is studying and considering other applications, including the transportation industry, where stronger, lighter metals may impact fuel economy.
“Carpenter continues to forge ahead as the leading developer of stainless steels and specialty alloys,” said Anne L. Stevens, Carpenter’s chairman and chief executive officer. “Our relationship with Manhattan Scientifics will ultimately give us new, cutting-edge manufacturing techniques that we can apply to many of our alloys to service an increasing global need for high strength materials.”
Manny Tsoupanarias, Manhattan’s CEO, said, “Carpenter Technology Corporation, a billion dollar multi-national organization, is exactly the kind of manufacturing partner we were looking for to bring our superior ultrafine grain metals to market throughout the world.” CEO Tsoupanarias continued, “The contract will provide quick and sustained revenue to Manhattan Scientifics. Moreover, we anticipate positive cash flow, reliable revenue and profitability during the next 12 months. This is a major breakthrough for our 8,600 shareholders.”
Marvin Maslow, Manhattan’s Chairman Emeritus, said, “Under Manny Tsoupanarias’s leadership, Manhattan Scientifics has re-invented itself. We have now demonstrated the efficacy of our business model by partnering with Carpenter. Manhattan’s objective has always been to identify and ‘partner’ with industrial manufacturers and marketers. The Carpenter relationship will become the tipping point to our success.”
In addressing Manhattan Scientifics, Mr. Maslow said, “We continue to be in close contact with brilliant scientists employed at the U.S. government’s multi-billion-dollar national security laboratories, who are developing disruptive, sea-change technologies. Manhattan’s goal is to show them the commercial path, provide them the capital, the courage and leadership under partnership arrangements with us. Manhattan will continue to demonstrate its ability in this respect, and plans to repeat the Carpenter-type experience with other large industrial corporations in other technical areas as it moves forward to create significant profit for its shareholders.”

LynuxWorks Adds Functionality and Expands Support for Microsoft Windows, Intel Technology With LynxSecure 3.1

Latest Version Widens Configuration Options; Continues to Lead in the Software Virtualization Space
LynuxWorks ~ September 21, 2009,
BOSTON, MA--(Marketwire - 09/21/09) - EMBEDDED SYSTEMS CONFERENCE 2009 -- LynuxWorks(TM), Inc., a world leader in embedded software, today announced the immediate release of LynxSecure 3.1, the latest version of its next-generation and award-winning separation kernel and embedded hypervisor. This update to LynxSecure takes advantage of new technologies, including guest operating support for the latest Microsoft Windows and the latest Intel Core2 Duo systems.
As with prior versions, LynxSecure 3.1 can virtualize the underlying hardware to enable multiple, heterogeneous operating systems (OS) to co-exist on the same platform. This mix can include traditional desktop OSes like fully virtualized Windows and para-virtualized Linux along with hard real-time OSes like the LynxOS RTOS family. LynxSecure 3.1 introduces support for Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows 2003 which are run as fully virtualized guest OSes, adding to the existing Windows XP support offered in version 3.0. LynxSecure 3.1 gives embedded systems developers the ultimate flexibility of full desktop systems, while retaining military-grade security with real-time performance and determinism.
LynxSecure also offers built-in virtual networking, allowing Windows applications to seamlessly communicate via TCP/IP with other virtualized OSes, such as Linux, running in a separate partition. This rapid and secure inter-partition communication is handled entirely by LynxSecure, without modifying the applications or the virtualized OS.
Unlike other hypervisor solutions and as a testament to the performance of LynxSecure, applications that require 3D graphics support can also be run at near-native performance on virtualized guest OSes. These applications are very commonly required in industries such as A&D, medical and gaming, bringing the functionality of LynxSecure to the reach of many more embedded developers.
Support for some of the latest Intel Core2 Duo devices, including reference platforms such as the American Portwell Wade 8067, is included in LynxSecure 3.1. The multi-core processor and hardware virtualization capabilities of these boards mean virtualized guest OSes can now operate at near-native performance.
"With the release of LynxSecure 3.1, we've again raised the bar for software virtualization solutions," said Gurjot Singh, CEO, LynuxWorks. "This new version gives our customers even more flexibility for their application development without compromising the performance and security that has defined LynxSecure as the leader in this new and exciting space."
LynxSecure can run on any 32-bit or 64-bit processor with a memory management unit (MMU) and provides 100 percent application binary compatibility between a stand alone OS and its virtualized version. Like all LynuxWorks products, LynxSecure is based on open standards, but it also offers the highest real-time and security capabilities, conforming to the MILS standard and designed to be certifiable to Common Criteria EAL 7+.
About LynuxWorks
LynuxWorks, a world leader in the embedded software market, is committed to providing open and reliable real-time operating systems (RTOS) and software tools to embedded developers. The company's LynxOS family of operating systems offers open standards with the highest level of safety and security features, enabling many mission-critical systems in defense, avionics and other industries. Additionally, LynuxWorks' BlueCat Linux provides the features and support of embedded Linux for companies wanting to use open source technology for their embedded applications. The Eclipse-based Luminosity IDE gives a powerful and consistent development system across all LynuxWorks operating systems. Since it was established in 1988, LynuxWorks has created technology that has been successfully deployed in thousands of designs and millions of products made by leading communications, avionics, aerospace/defense, and consumer electronics companies. LynuxWorks' headquarters are located in San Jose, Calif. For more information, visit www.lynuxworks.com.

JDSU Advances Tunable Strategy

Optical Vendor Releases Tunable XFP Into Production; Also Leverages Key Building Blocks From Tunable XFP to Create Next Generation ITLA and 300 Pin Solutions
Source: JDSU ~ September 21, 2009,
Companies:
JDS Uniphase Corp.
JDS UNIPHASE CANAD EXCHANGEABLE
MILPITAS, CA--(Marketwire - 09/21/09) - JDSU (NASDAQ:JDSU - News) (TSX:JDU - News) today announced key advancements as part of its strategy to offer a complete portfolio of tunable solutions in multiple form factors for use within DWDM networks.
First, JDSU has released its tunable XFP transceiver into production. Announced in March 2009, the tunable XFP transceiver is a dramatically smaller pluggable solution that network equipment manufacturers (NEMs) will implement to send and receive light within DWDM networks.
In addition, JDSU has created a next generation integrable tunable laser assembly (ITLA) that it plans to incorporate into its 300 pin transponders and also offer as a standalone product to the open market.
JDSU leveraged two key building blocks from the Tunable XFP transceiver, the tunable TOSA and ASIC, to create the new ITLA. The tunable TOSA within the ITLA has been modified into a continuous wave (CW) TOSA to accommodate a tunable laser, designed for use with an external Lithium Niobate modulator to enable high performance in Long Haul and Ultra Long Haul networks. The CW TOSA is a key component that allows JDSU to offer lower cost and lower power tunable solutions.
"The DWDM market is looking for multiple supplier solutions that provide lower cost, lower power consumption and a smaller footprint to support the carrier dilemma of single digit revenue growth but double digit traffic growth," said Daryl Inniss, vice president and practice leader of Components at Ovum. "It's great to see that JDSU has extended its tunable XFP technology to support 300 pin MSA transponders as this should help provide lower power and lower cost options to the market."
"JDSU has dedicated a great amount of time and expertise to create a complete tunable platform that is optimized for all of the flexibility required in agile optical networks," said Tom Fawcett, director of Transmission Product Marketing for the CCOP business segment at JDSU.
As consumer use of online video, voice, and data applications puts additional demand on network capacity, NEMs and service providers are under pressure to add optical solutions that can manage increased bandwidth in a flexible and cost effective way. Tunable optical transceivers and transponders act as a key interface that convert optical signals into electrical data as they enter and exit WDM networks.
The tunable XFP transceiver, next generation ITLA module and tunable TOSA will all be displayed at JDSU Booth #701 at the 2009 ECOC Conference from September 21-23, 2009 in Vienna, Austria.
About JDSU
JDSU (NASDAQ:JDSU - News) (TSX:JDU - News) enables broadband and optical innovation in the communications, commercial and consumer markets. Colonel Pete Gersten, Commander 432nd Air Expeditionary Wing, Creech Air Force Base, USAF on UAV operations for Close Air Support

Defence IQ ~ September 18, 2009,
LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The proliferation of unmanned “drones” as a vital element of the Close Air Support chain has increased dramatically over the last few months. The operations (separate from the CIA-led operations that target Al-Qaeda in Waziristan) benefit from the long loiter time of these aircraft over a target area, ensuring that troops on the ground have a dedicated resource to deliver extra firepower when they need it. The most common such aircraft are the MQ-1 Predator and MQ-9 Reaper, both of which are remotely operated by the 432nd Air Expeditionary Wing of the US Air Force from Creech Air Force Base in Nevada. Commanding the 432nd is Colonel Pete Gersten, and this September he’ll be outlining the many challenges of operating these platforms at Defence IQ’s Close Air Support conference.
The issues that arise from remotely flying Close Air Support missions over 5,000 miles away are considerable. For a start, Afghanistan’s airspace is incredibly busy with conventional manned aircraft operations – be they fast jets, large supply aircraft or essential tactical movements by helicopters. But the benefits that both Predator and Reaper bring are so great that Allied militaries are willing to expend considerable effort on integrating these aircraft within their current force structure. In addition to the ability to deliver weapons accurately, both platforms have highly capable sensor suites that enable invaluable tactical visual intelligence to be shared with other friendly forces in the area – providing an unprecedented level of situational awareness.
Speaking ahead of the event, Conference Director Keith Mallon said “We’re delighted that Colonel Gersten is joining us for this important occasion. There are many fascinating sessions at this event, but it’s the session on unmanned systems that has really caught the Close Air Support community’s attention”.
The Defence IQ conference, now in it’s 7th year is dedicated to exploring both the air and ground elements to Close Air Support with themes on target acquisition, air-land integration and the training and development of highly trained personnel to coordinate CAS missions from the ground. Taking place at the Russell Hotel, London from 28-30 September, more information can be found at www.closeairsupport.co.uk

Airbus confident on European loans for A350

* Airbus confident on A350 development loans
* Talks with Spain progressing well, spokesman says
* Loans come amid WTO trade spat over aircraft subsidies

(Adds quotes, details, Boeing comment)
PARIS, Sept 18 (Reuters) - Planemaker Airbus (EAD.PA) said on Friday it was confident on the outcome of talks with European governments over development loans for its A350 passenger jet, but rival Boeing (BA.N) reiterated its opposition to the loans. An Airbus spokesman said no deal had been signed with Spain, which is reported to have agreed to put up money, and that he was confident on the outcome of parallel talks with Britain.
A French newspaper reported on Friday that Spain was ready to lend 300 million euros as its share of loan funding from four nations in a system criticised by the United States.
Britain last month pledged 340 million pounds in loans but La Tribune newspaper reported that talks on finalising that deal had run into difficulties over the form of the loans.
"Nothing has been finalised (with Spain) and the government will make an annoucnement when it is the case," an Airbus spokesman said.
"We are confident about the talks in the UK," he added.
Airbus is also seeking development loans from France and Germany, which have tentatively pledged to provide 1.4 billion and 1.1 billion euros respectively. Developing the A350 mid-sized jet is expected to cost a total of 11 billion euros.
"The talks with the (four) governments are proceeding well," the Airbus spokesman said.
The loans help to guarantee work for the four nations that founded Airbus, now a subsidiary of EADS (EAD.PA), four decades ago but have been attacked as unfair aid by the United States.
The World Trade Organisation said in a preliminary confidential ruling earlier this month that loans on previous plane projects were potentially harmful unsubsidies and in some cases constituted illegal export aid, according to sources familiar with the case. [ID:nL6438083][ID:nL4598109]
The United States says the European loan system penalises its workers and is no longer necessary to prop up Airbus, which has overtaken Boeing (BA.N) as the world's largest jetmaker. "Today Airbus and parent EADS have a bank balance of more than 8 billion euros," Boeing spokesman Charlie Miller said.
"They have no need for financial support from the taxpayer and should finance aircraft development with their own cash and commercial loans."
Airbus has denied the loans are given on preferential terms.
A European Union counter-suit at the WTO, claiming damage to Airbus from research and infrastructure spending that it says benefits Boeing, will be assessed by WTO judges next year.
The EU says the WTO case on past loans does not apply to the A350 but the United States says reverting to the same pattern of funding could aggravate the WTO's largest ever trade dispute.

IDGA: MARCORSYSCOM's Equipment Demonstration and Future Capabilities

Advances in US Marine Corps soldier systems demonstrated to show better soldier protection
IDGA ~ September 18, 2009,
NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The United States Marine Corps Systems Command (MARCORSYSCOM) recently hosted a media day held at their Gruntworks Testing Facility to demonstrate the monumental improvements made in Marine Infantry Equipment. The Marine Corps are leading the fight having taken great consideration into all of the systems employed by infantrymen on the ground.
From top to bottom advancements in protection, uniforms and cutting edge technology are now fielding at advanced rates which have never been seen in US Military procurement. The Marine Corps demonstration proved that feedback from troops on the ground are reaching senior leaders, making critical decisions on life essential equipment.
Body Armor
The Marines who led the initial push into Iraq in 2003 wore Individual Body Armor (IBA) without the protective ceramic plate inserts known as Small Arms Protective Inserts (SAPI). Marines now deploying to Afghanistan have a choice between two types of body armor, both featuring the Enhanced SAPI plates (ESAPI). The Modular Tactical Vest features protective plates for the front and back of a Marine as well as side protection thru the side SAPI inserts. The Modular Tactical Vest (MTV) and Scalable Plate Carrier are both being fielded and deployed with Marines in Afghanistan and are giving the commanders on the ground the option to modify and adjust to the tactical threat given the operating environment. The newer vests are also modular in design which enables the Marine to modify how he or she mounts all ammo pouches, radios and other critical items on their individual vest. According to Lt. Col AJ Pasagian, Program Manager for Infantry Combat Equipment (PM ICE) at MARCORSYSCOM, the advances in the vests have provided more area protection against direct fire and rifle ballistics. The Marine Corps are also currently in source selection for the Improved Modular Tactical Vest (IMTV) which is a government owned design which has been tried and tested by Marines. The IMTV will enable Marines to egress out of the vest in an emergency which will also provide the Navy Corpsman the ability to treat combat related injuries while still protecting the injured Marine.
Footwear
Danner rugged all terrain boots with a 2 year life expectancy are being fielded to Marines deploying to Afghanistan, doubling past life cycles for combat boots. These newly designed boots provides a wider more stable base to assume and control the greater combat load operating in Afghanistan according to Lt. Col Pasagian. The standards have been pushed out to the military boot industry to provide a much needed advancement in protection of a Marine’s feet. The solicitation will be going out to the entire industry for an improved boot and in FY 2011 it is expected to be fielded to both active duty and reserve components, to be competed openly to all industry vendors.
Helmets
MARCORSYSCOM has also teamed up with PEO Soldier in the sourcing and procurement of the Enhanced Combat Helmet (ECH). The ECH will be the next generation helmet designed again to provide the best protection against direct fire and fragmentation. The current helmet; Advanced Combat Helmet (ACH) is fielded across the board in the Army and Marine Corps. While a monumental improvement to the PASSGT or Kevlar which had been used for decades the advances in design and overall weight and comfort have been proven in thousands of contact reports and those Soldiers and Marines who survived them.
Night Vision
Night Vision Devices are considered by most as one of the greatest combat multipliers given to a Soldier and Marine. The PVS-14s which are currently fielded are a lightweight, monocular night vision device which features an adjustable brightness which lowers the intensity given differing environments. The PVS-14 is much smaller and lighter than the previous PVS-7 series which were binocular. MARCORSYSCOM hope to have every Marine assigned to a ground combat element to deploy with a PVS-14 series NVG to give them the edge at night.
The M-16 Rifle
The ability to reach out and touch the enemy when needed is the biggest tool in a Marine arsenal. The M-16 A4 is a large improvement over the M-16 A-2 which deployed in the initial invasion of Iraq. The A-4 provides Marines the modularity being seen across the board with other systems and enables the weapon to be modified and combined with multiple optical and laser systems. . The RCO is a fixed optical aiming sight which provides increased range and target identification to the rifleman mounts on the MIL-STD-1913 rail systems on top of the weapons. The introduction of the Individual Weapons Sight (IWNS-12) enables targeting and acquisition to the Marine riflemen, who can own any nighttime environment. In addition to the thermal systems is the laser aiming devices the PEQ-16A. The PEQ enables Marines and Soldiers engaged at night to accurately direct friendly small arms fire, indirect fire and even close air support at given illuminated targets without giving away friendly positions.
These multiple advancements in fighting systems have given the Marine Corps the needed edge in the Global War on Terror (GWOT). With ongoing combat operations supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, the improvements and changes made in Infantry equipment have trickled down to support elements on all fronts. Changes made on weapons systems, clothing, body armor, optics, night vision and helmets have paved the way for protecting future generations of Marines who are at the tip of the spear in protecting national security interests of the United States and allied nations. Hats are off to Marine Corps Systems Command for a job well done in helping to save Marine lives fighting downrange and give them the cutting edge technologies as quickly as possible to combat terrorism and conduct counter insurgency operations worldwide.
