Lockheed Martin Awarded Task Order for Continued Production of Symphony IED Jammer Systems

Defense News: SYRACUSE, N.Y., March 16 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Navyawarded Lockheed Martin (NYSE:LMT - News) a sole source indefinite-delivery-indefinite-quantity contract for Symphony Radio Controlled Improvised Explosive Device (RC-IED) Defeat jammer systems. With an initial task order valued at $40.8 million, the contract runs through September 2014 and has a ceiling value of$940 million.

The Symphony systems are U.S. Government-approved for sale through the Foreign Military Sales program to allied, coalition and partner nations for operations in Iraq, Afghanistan and other nations.

"Symphony is mounted on convoy vehicles and has been proven in combat against Radio-Controlled IEDs," said Carl Bannar, vice president and general manager of Lockheed Martin's Radar Systems business. USIBC Hosts 7th U.S.-India High Technology Cooperation Group Summit






Dialogue Underpins the U.S.-India Strategic Partnership
Defense News: WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The U.S.-India Business Council (USIBC) today convened leading executives from U.S. and Indian industry, joined by top government officials, for the 7th Meeting of the U.S.-India High Technology Cooperation Group (HTCG).

The HTCG Summit provided a day-long opportunity for Indian and U.S. Industry to interact, identify market barriers, and highlight opportunities in high-tech areas such as Defense/Strategic Trade, Civil Nuclear Cooperation, Biotechnology, Nanotechnology and Civil Aviation. The findings of these private sector interactions were presented to the U.S. Department of Commerce, Bureau of Industrial Security, and India’s Ministry of External Affairs to inform the bilateral discussions between the Government of India and U.S. Government scheduled to take place tomorrow, March 16. Indian Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao was chief guest and presided over the day’s event at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Building on the successful state visit of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in November 2009, the HTCG working groups identified specific barriers that continue to hamper high-technology trade as well as acknowledged the growing scope for collaboration. The Summit also provided a unique opportunity for business leaders to hear from key U.S. and Indian policy makers, including Indian Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao and Deputy Assistant to the President of the United States, Michael Froman.

Foreign Secretary Rao spoke about the need for further streamlining of U.S. Export Controls. Assistant Secretary of Commerce Kevin Wolf presented an update on export control issues affecting U.S. – India trade. Michael Froman, Deputy Assistant to the President, underscored the importance of the U.S.-India relationship, saying: “There is no other bilateral relationship as important as the U.S.-India relationship.”

Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency Awards $4.395 Million to Fraunhofer CMB for H1N1 Vaccine Development



Defense News: NEWARK, Del.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Fraunhofer USA Center for Molecular Biotechnology (CMB) announced today that it has received a $4.395 million award from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to develop a vaccine against H1N1 influenza virus using its plant-based production platform.

This will be the third round of funding from DARPA and follows on CMB’s successful optimization and feasibility studies completed in 2008 and a new, state-of-the-art cGMP pilot manufacturing facility completed at the end of 2009. This current funding will allow CMB’s H1N1 vaccine candidate to progress to Phase 1 clinical trials, therefore validating the utility of the technology for manufacturing products for use in humans.

According to Dr. Vidadi Yusibov, Executive Director of Fraunhofer USA CMB, “Over the past eight years, we have taken our plant-based transient expression system for recombinant protein production from concept, through technical innovations, process improvement, and scale up. While the production platform has been validated by extensive pre-clinical studies, we are looking forward to entering the clinical phase of development.”

The need for alternative manufacturing platforms with rapid response capability became apparent in the past year with the emergence of the H1N1 influenza. DARPA’s interest in developing advanced manufacturing technologies for vaccine production stems from the need to protect military personnel and civilian populations from infections agents.

When asked their opinions on this latest announcement from Fraunhofer CMB, members of Delaware’s Congressional delegation made the following comments.

Air Berlin cancels $1.7 billion Boeing 787 order

Defense News: FRANKFURT, March 16 (Reuters) - Air Berlin (AB1.DE), Germany's second-biggest airline after Lufthansa (LHAG.DE), cancelled about $1.7 billion worth of firm orders for Boeing's (BA.N) 787 Dreamliner aircraft to cut its financial obligations.

"With a partnership spirit we have mutually agreed with Boeing to adjust the Air Berlin order book to meet Air Berlin's operational requirements and the market conditions," the company said on Tuesday.


Air Berlin cut its firm order to 15 planes from 25 and the number of options for further 787 aircraft to 5 from 10. Each 787 aircraft has a list price of about $170 million.


In addition, it is deferring delivery of nine Boeing 737 aircraft to 2015 from 2010 or 2011, it said.


"For Air Berlin, the agreement means a significant reduction of its financial obligations due to lower and much more distributed investment profile," it said.


Air Berlin had already said last year that it could cancel or defer some of its outstanding aircraft orders, which also include 4 Q400s built by Bombardier (BBDb.TO) and 26 A320-family aircraft from Airbus (EAD.PA). (Reporting by Maria Sheahan)

Defense News: SUFFOLK, Va., March 15 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Joint Forces Command is testing a brand new video intelligence system delivered by Lockheed Martin (NYSE:LMT - News) that will help commanders take better control of the flood of video being generated on the modern battlefield. The Valiant Angel system uses broadcast television technology to help commanders collect, archive, search, analyze and share full-motion video.

This first Valiant Angel system was delivered just over 90 days after contract award. Joint Forces Command awarded a team comprised of Lockheed Martin, Harris Corporation and NetApp a$29 million contract to develop the system in September. The Valiant Angel Network Operations Center and first node was delivered on December 4th to the Command's Joint Intelligence Laboratory, where it is undergoing integration testing in advance of a planned deployment to Afghanistan this spring.

For instance, users can search the archive for a specific person or vehicle, or they can fuse mapping, geospatial, and multi-source intelligence data with video feeds to conduct in-depth analysis. Valiant Angel works with both archived video and with live, incoming video streams.

L-3 Awarded F-16 Mission Training Center Contract Option



Defense News: NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--L-3 Communications (NYSE:LLL - News) announced today that its Link Simulation & Training division has been awarded a $20.9 million contract option on the F-16 Mission Training Center (MTC) program. This contract option, received from the Aeronautical Systems Center's Training Systems Product Group at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, brings the total contract value on the program to $109.1 million.

Under the contract option, L-3 Link will build and deliver an F-16 MTC suite that includes four high-definition simulators. The BoeingCompany will provide the instructor/operator stations and brief/debrief systems. This marks the second four-ship F-16 MTC the U.S. Air Force has ordered from L-3 Link.

All F-16 MTC suites under order are being integrated with L-3 Link’s HD World simulation product line. Under the program, the U.S. Air Force could order as many as 20 four-ship F-16 MTCs for delivery to installations in the U.S., Europe and Pacific region. High-fidelity F-16 MTC simulators, which will accurately model all of the fighter aircraft’s weapon systems and ordnance, will be delivered in Block 40/42 and 50/52 configurations to support basic and advanced pilot mission training, tactics validation and mission rehearsal.
