Micrel Introduces New Gigabit PHY for Embedded Ethernet

Low Power Consumption, High Integration and Small Size Targets "Green" Systems

Defense News: SAN JOSE, CA--(Marketwire - 03/22/10) - Micrel Inc., (NASDAQ:MCRL - News), an industry leader in analog, high bandwidth communications and Ethernet IC solutions, today announced the KSZ9021GN and KSZ9021RN, two new single-port 10/100/1000Base-T Gigabit transceivers that support data transfer over a standard CAT-5 unshielded twisted pair cable. The solutions are ideal for enabling green system designs and Gigabit Ethernet performance in Home, Industrial, SOHO and SMB applications, such as set top boxes, broadband gateways, media converters and IP devices for voice and video. Volume quantities are currently available. For specific pricing, please contact your local Micrel sales office. Samples can be ordered at: http://www.micrel.com/ProductList.do.

"Micrel's Ethernet products have been a key enabler in the broad adoption of Ethernet in the Digital Home and Industrial segments," noted Wiren Perera, Micrel's director of Ethernet Products. "Increasing performance demands for these applications necessitate migration to higher speeds so Micrel is now delivering Gigabit solutions with lower power, smaller size and reduced emissions -- all comprising the same high Micrel standards in quality and reliability. Micrel's KSZ9021 series also features a unique level of integration which, combined with low power and size, makes these solutions ideal for Green systems."

The high level of on-chip integration in the KSZ9021 series results in reduced system bill of materials, simplified hardware design, improved signal integrity and reduced emissions. Termination resistors and LDO controller, along with built-in diagnostic features, are just some of the integrated functions that significantly reduce the cost and the complexity of Gigabit Ethernet applications. Specifically, the on-chip termination eliminates eight external termination resistors. The 10/100/1000Base-T IEEE802.3-compliant transceivers feature RGMII (KSZ9021RN) and GMII (KSZ9021GN) interfaces. The ICs also offer LinkMD® cable diagnostics that support quick resolution of common cabling problems and reduce network downtime. Automatic MD/MDIX crossover support eliminates the need for a cross-over cable, thus reducing installation costs. The devices will be available for both commercial and industrial temperature ranges. The commercial range is currently available and the industrial range will be introduced in the first quarter of 2010.

Micrel's 10A Fully Integrated Synchronous Buck Regulator Redefines "High Power Density"

SuperThermal(TM) 10A MOSFETs Enables Highest Power Density in the Industry
SAN JOSE, CA--(Marketwire - 01/05/10) - Micrel Inc. (NASDAQ:MCRL - News), an industry leader in analog, high bandwidth communications and Ethernet IC solutions, today heralded a pioneering product in the high power density family of buck regulators, the MIC22950. The synchronous step-down regulator features 10A integrated SuperThermal(TM) MOSFETs and is optimized for highest efficiency. With only 1microH inductor and a 100microF output capacitor, the device achieves more than 95 percent efficiency over a broad load range. It also features built-in sequencing, tracking and ramp control capabilities -- enabling multiple power-up sequencing and tracking protocols. The solution is ideal for high power density point-of-load conversion, base stations, servers and routers, Blu-ray players, computer peripherals, FPGAs, DSPs and low voltage ASIC power applications. The MIC22950 is currently available in volume quantities with pricing starting at $4.31 for 1K quantities. Samples can now be ordered at: http://www.micrel.com/ProductList.do.
"Super-high power density in a small footprint combined with 95 percent efficiency offer remarkable benefits in advanced applications such as Super 3G/LTE base stations, servers and workstations," noted Andrew Cowell, vice president of analog marketing. "The MIC22950 is extremely easy to use and saves significant BOM cost for the designer by integrating Micrel's unique SuperThermal(TM) MOSFETs."
The MIC22950 has an ultra-high speed control loop that keeps the output voltage within regulation even under extreme transient load swings that are commonly found in FPGAs and low voltage ASICs. The output voltage can be adjusted down to 0.7V to address all low voltage power needs, from a 3.3V or 5V power bus. A full range of sequencing and tracking options is available. The Enable/Delay pin, combined with the Power Good/POR pin, allows multiple outputs to be sequenced as desired during turn-on and turn-off. The RC (Ramp Control(TM)) pin allows the device to be connected to another product in Micrel's MIC22xxx and/or its MIC68xxx family, thereby allowing the designer to maintain the output voltages within a certain delta-V on start up. The MIC22950 has thermal shutdown and current limit protection, is available in a 32-pin 5mm x 5mm MLF, and offers a junction operating range from -40degC to +125degC.

Micrel Extends Performance and Saves Cost With New Synchronous Hyper Speed Control(TM) Family of PWM Controllers

New Architecture Dramatically Reduces Output Capacitance and Features Excellent Transient Response for High Delta V Operation
On Thursday July 2, 2009, 7:00 am EDT
Micrel Inc., (NASDAQ:MCRL - News), an industry leader in analog, high bandwidth communications and Ethernet IC solutions, today introduced the first members of the family of Hyper Speed Control(TM) PWM controllers, the MIC2164, MIC2164-2 and MIC2164-3. The IC's Hyper Speed Control(TM) architecture significantly reduces the required output capacitance and allows for excellent transient response, while making high delta V operation (VIN=28V, VOUT=0.8V) possible. The solutions are ideal for set-top boxes, gateways, routers, computing peripherals, and telecom/networking equipments. The MIC2164 is currently available in volume quantities with pricing starting at $0.72 for 1K quantities while MIC2164-2 and MIC2164-3 are priced at $0.77 and $0.82 for 1K quantities respectively. Samples can be ordered on line at: http://www.micrel.com/ProductList.do.
"Micrel's unique Hyper Speed Control(TM) architecture offers terrific benefits such as reduced BOM cost and world class transient response for cost-sensitive applications such as set-top-box, graphic cards and servers," stated John T. Lee, director of power products, Micrel. "The huge advantage gained by our digitally modified hyper speed architecture is high speed, resulting in a smaller footprint and lower system-level cost for our customers."
Micrel's new devices are constant on-time mode PWM controllers that feature wide input voltage range, high performance, and are capable of driving up to 25A of load current. The MIC2164 operates at 300kHz PWM frequency while MIC2164-2 and MIC2164-3 operate at 600kHz and 1MHz respectively, to allow a size reduction path. The family achieves greater than 95 percent efficiency, while still switching at high frequencies, over a broad load range. The MIC2164 Hyper Speed Control(TM) family of PWM controllers operates over a wide input supply range of 3V to 28V and also offers cycle-by-cycle current limiting for FET protection. While the UVLO circuitry ensures proper operation under power-sag conditions to prevent the MOSFETs from overheating, the Soft Start feature reduces the inrush current. It also features built-in compensation with an external ripple injection circuit. The MIC2164 Hyper Speed Control(TM) family of PWM controllers is available in a 10-pin MSOP package with a junction operating range from -40degC to +125degC.
