Harris Corporation Successfully Completes Final Test of First Navy Satellite Terminal with Simultaneous X- and Ka-band Capabilities

Terminal Provides Increased Bandwidth Onboard Guided Missile Destroyers

Defense News: MELBOURNE, Fla., April 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS - News) has completed the operational test of the first U.S. Navy satellite communications terminal to simultaneously provide standard military X-band communications and higher-speed Ka-band communications through a single dual-band feed. The AN/WSC-6G(V)9 terminal is designed for use onboard the Navy's Arleigh Burke class of guided-missile

destroyers.

The addition of Ka-band capabilities to the terminals is important because it enables the Navy fleet to take advantage of the increased bandwidth and higher data rates available on the next-generation Wideband Global SATCOM (WGS) satellite constellation. WGS represents a major improvement in communications bandwidth and can supply more than 10 times the capacity of existing legacy systems.

Successful completion of the operational test, as well as environmental qualification and military satellite certification, enables the Navy to begin fielding systems. The milestone represents the last phase of a 10-year, $172 million contract awarded to Harris in 2000 by the U.S. Navy Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR), San Diego.

The Harris AN/WSC-6E(V)9 "Ka-ready" terminals currently installed throughout the fleet can now be upgraded from C-/X-band to include the Ka-band communications capabilities through pier-side installation of a Ka-band electronics kit. Fielding of Ka-band kits is expected to begin in the U.S. Government's fiscal year 2011.

Harris Corporation's Weapon Data Link for Small Diameter Bomb Increment II Receives National Security Agency Certification

Defense News ~ MELBOURNE, Fla., Jan. 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- An advanced data link developed by Harris Corporation (NYSE: HRS) and ViaSat (Nasdaq: VSAT) for Boeing's proposed Small Diameter Bomb Increment II (SDB II) program has completed risk-reduction tests, receiving Type 1 certification from the National Security Agency. Successful completion of risk reduction means the aircraft-launched munition is now ready for the Engineering Manufacture and Development (EMD) phase of the program.
The SDB II Weapon Data Link (WDL) will connect the munitions to tactical networks, allowing operators to engage moving targets on the ground even after a munition is launched. Harris successfully demonstrated the system using Link-16 and Combat Net Radio UHF transmissions as part of the SDB II risk reduction program, which was completed in October. In both Link-16 and UHF modes, the munition's messaging protocol – a critical requirement for network-enabled weapons – was demonstrated successfully.
"SDB II provides the warfighter with the ability to attack mobile targets from stand-off distances in adverse weather conditions," said Dan Jaspering, director of Direct Attack Weapons for Boeing Weapons Programs. "NSA certification and the Link 16 and UHF Over the Air (OTA) demonstrations retire three key remaining risk items on the program and help pave the way for the transition to EMD."
The Harris Small Secure Network Terminal (SSNT), a network-enabled radio using a software communications architecture, received National Security Agency (NSA) Type 1 certification. Type 1 certification means the Weapon Data Link is able to communicate secret-level classified information. The Harris Sierra II™ encryption technology provides the foundation for this level of information security.

Advanced Adapter Provides Interoperability with Legacy Radios on Remote Islands
GATINEAU, Quebec, December 23, 2009, /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Air traffic control and radio communications technology from Harris Corporation (NYSE: HRS) will provide critical air-to-ground and ground-to-ground digital communications services for a new Manila Area Control Center in the Philippines – connecting it with remote sites throughout the 7,000-island nation.
The Harris® Liberty-STAR™ Voice Communication and Control System (VCCS) will improve communications between the Area Control Center controllers and aircraft en route and on the ground. Also, the Harris Integrated Radio Equipment and Network Adapter (IRENA), which can emulate virtually any radio link, will enable communications to isolated areas – where digital services are sparse and reliance on legacy links and older analog technology is required. The contract marks the first international sale of the IRENA system.

Integration of the RF-7800M radio with the Harris RF-7800B family of ruggedized Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN) satellite terminals provides warfighters with a unique end-to-end secure beyond-line-of-sight network connectivity.

The new software upgrade will allow users to extend the range of ANW2 data to beyond-line-of-sight by linking the radio to the BGAN network through the RF-7800B. The combined system offers throughput rates of up to 2 Mbps over the BGAN network when using embedded TCP/IP acceleration and compression, thus reducing INMARSAT costs. It is the only integrated, military-rugged, wideband SATCOM on-the-move system capable of seamlessly maintaining high-speed encrypted IP data across an extended battle space. The RF-7800M is available to international customers.
The RF-7800M integration with the RF-7800B will also provide the reach-back capability on a global scale, connecting operators at the tactical edge with commanders at the highest levels.
