EADS North America Delivers UH-72A Lakota Helicopters to the Alabama Army National Guard

Defense News ~ New Lakota Aircraft Will Improve the State's Homeland Security Mission
Defense News ~ BIRMINGHAM, AL--(Marketwire - 01/09/10) - The Alabama Army National Guard's ability to perform homeland security operations and carry out support missions within the state will be significantly enhanced with the introduction of four UH-72A Lakota Light Utility Helicopters delivered by EADS North America.
These aircraft are being based at the Army Aviation Support Facility #2 in Birmingham, where the initial two Lakotas were formally unveiled during a ceremony today.
The Alabama Army National Guard's Lakotas are assigned to Detachment 1, Company C, 2nd Battalion, 151st Aviation Regiment. The unit's federal level missions include aerial command, control and reconnaissance in homeland security operations; and it also is tasked with state-level support for Alabama's governor and community-based organizations.
"It is particularly appropriate that the Lakota has come to Alabama, which has developed a very strong relationship with EADS," said David R. Oliver, Jr., EADS North America's chief operating officer. "Our company has an important industrial presence in the state -- with a growing engineering center and a recently-expanded aircraft service center in Mobile. We also look forward to the day when EADS can establish in Mobile a manufacturing center of excellence to support the Northrop Grumman KC-45 Tanker, as well as the production of A330 commercial freighters."
The UH-72As are to replace Detachment 1's aging OH-58 Kiowa helicopters, and are the first new aircraft coming directly to the Alabama National Guard in many years.
"We are extremely excited to be one of the states receiving the UH-72 aircraft," said Alabama National Guard State Army Aviation Officer, Col. Charles A. Bonasera. "This aircraft brings the Alabama National Guard a much greater capability than its predecessor in the conduct of our homeland security/support mission requirements. The aviators that now fly this aircraft are also very excited and absolutely love what it does for their mission."
EADS North America has delivered 93 Lakotas to the U.S. Army and five to the U.S. Navy. The Army aircraft are based at active duty Army and Army National Guard locations throughout the United States, as well as in Puerto Rico. Future deployments of UH-72As are anticipated in the Pacific, Europe and Japan.
The UH-72A is a key element in the U.S. Army's rotary-wing fleet modernization effort, and the program represents one of the most rapid introductions of an aircraft in the service's history. The Light Utility Helicopter contract was awarded to EADS North America in June 2006, followed by the company's startup of UH-72A deliveries in November of the same year. Operational service began in early 2007.
A total of 345 Lakotas are expected to be acquired through 2015 for U.S. Army and National Guard operations in missions that range from homeland security and drug interdiction to general support, logistics and medical evacuation flights. The aircraft enable aging National Guard OH-58 and UH-1 rotary-wing aircraft to be retired, while UH-72A deliveries to the active component of the U.S. Army free up UH-60 Black Hawks for assignment to warfighting missions.
EADS North America has delivered five H-72A versions to the U.S. Navy for use in training test pilots from the U.S. military and allied countries. In addition to the current production of H-72As and UH-72As, EADS North America is offering the Armed Scout 645 variant for the U.S. Army's armed aerial scout requirement.
Production of the UH-72A helicopter family is performed at a state-of-the-art facility in Columbus, Miss., which has created new job opportunities in the southern United States and throughout the country. The facility is operated by the American Eurocopter business unit of EADS North America.

EADS Defence & Security Awarded Contract to Supply COR(P25) Radio Network to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police "O" Division

IP-Based P25 Digital Public Safety Radio Ensures Efficient and Secure Communication; COR(P25) Radio Communication Network Will Secure the G8 Summit Set for June 2010; The Network Will Expand as Part of a Major Crown Project for the RCMP as a P25 Mission Critical Region Operation Communication System
Defense News ~ OTTAWA--(Marketwire - 01/08/10) - EADS Defence & Security is pleased to announce that it has been awarded the contract for deployment of its COR(P25) digital radio communications network to service the RCMP "O" Division critical communications in the province of Ontario, Canada. The contract includes the rollout of a state of the art, open standard P25 IP-based digital public safety radio communication network and command and control centers that will expand across Ontario as the new Central Region Operation Communication System. The P25 digital communication network will also be used as the primary means to provide secure wireless communication during the upcoming G8 being held in Canada in June 2010.
The rollout is a multi-step approach with a number of phases. Phase 1 of the project will be implemented in time for exclusive use to secure the G8 Summit and be spread out across a 360km corridor in Ontario. The second and larger phase will extend the network to cover the entire province and replace the existing Central Region Operation Communication System.
"We are pleased to have been awarded this contract for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police," said Steve Shanck, General Manager for P25 radio network solutions. "Unlike other applications, the RCMP will not operate both trunking and conventional networks, but will fast track the new P25 system across the province. As the market adoption of P25 radio increases, our COR(P25) solution will continue to demonstrate market leadership as have our hundreds of mission critical radio networks around the world."
As an IP-based, open-standard (Project P25) digital trunked solution, COR(P25) allows P25 and non-P25 radios to operate together on one core architecture, providing operators full autonomy and control over the radio network.
"This contract is a concrete illustration of EADS's commitment to expanding our operations in Canada," Pierre Delestrade, CEO, EADS Canada, said. South Korea To Transfer UAV, Missile Technologies To UAE

Defense News ~ SEOUL, South Korea - January 09, 2010: Korea promised to transfer technology for its unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), following its successful bid to build four nuclear reactors in the Middle East nation, a government source said Thursday.
(Image/Photo: RQ-101 unmanned aerial vehicle) Defense Minister Kim Tae-young made the commitment during his visit to the UAE in November to discuss bilateral defense issues as well as to support the landmark $20 billion deal, the source told The Korea Times.
Kim also offered to provide key arms technologies related to the homegrown Hyunmoo ballistic and cruise missiles to the UAE as part of efforts to expand defense cooperation between the two countries, he said on condition of anonymity.
Technology on an electromagnetic pulse bomb (EMP) is among the key items for cooperation promised by Korea, said the source. The state-funded Agency for Defense Development (ADD) has been pushing to develop the bomb capable of neutralizing an enemy's command-and-control, communications and defense radar systems.
EMPs can severely disrupt electronic equipment, which is susceptible to damage by transient power surges. An EMP attack is generated by a very short, intense energy pulse or high-altitude nuclear blast. The agency plans to complete the development by 2014.
"The UAE asked Korea to provide such key arms technologies as part of the package deal for the reactor contract," the source said. "Korea's positive response to the request played an important role in sealing the deal." Speculation has been growing after the agreement that there could have been some behind-the-scene promises to satisfy the UAE needs.
At that time, Seoul's defense ministry declined to elaborate, only saying the two sides exchanged views on ways to expand bilateral defense cooperation programs. As for the UAV, Korea will offer the technology on the Night Intruder-300, also known as RQ-101, built by Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), according to the source. KAI built the RQ-101 corps-level battlefield-reconnaissance UAV between 2001 and 2004.
The Korean Army bought five sets of RQ-101s, with each set including six aircraft, a launcher and a ground-control station.
KAI is also discussing the sale of the RQ-101 to Libya.
The RQ-101 has a service ceiling of 4.5 kilometers and a cruise speed of 120 to 150 kilometers per hour. The 215-kilogram aircraft has a service radius of 200 kilometers and can operate for up to six hours in the air.
The UAV is capable of multipurpose operations to perform missions like wide area surveillance, reconnaissance, target acquisition, bombing guidance, battlefield supervision and checking target break-down.
It is also possible to transfer real-time images, especially in unfavorable environments during day and night. Some observers say, however, potential exports of the RQ-101 to either the UAE or Libya could cause a political or diplomatic row between South Korea and Israel given the ground-control station for the UAV was developed with technical assistance from Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI).
IAI offered the technology when it sold its Searcher II UAVs to South Korea.Referred missile technologies are related to those for the 300-kilometer-range Hyunmoo-II ballistic missile and the 1,000-kilometer-range Hyunmoo-III surface-to-surface cruise missile developed by the ADD and LIG Nex1.
The Hyunmoo-III missiles have been operational with the Army since last year. The Hyunmoo-III can hit targets with a margin of error of plus or minus five meters aided by a Terrain Contour Matching (TERCOM) system.
