Northrop Grumman Returns Restored B-2 Bomber to Active Duty: Northrop Grumman has returned to service with the U.S. Air Force a freshly painted, completely overhauled B-2 stealth bomber known as the "Spirit of Pennsylvania." This aircraft is the first B-2 to receive the insignia of the newly formed Global Strike Command, which assumed operational control of the B-2 fleet on Feb 1. In the photo, Northrop Grumman technicians prepare jet for its return flight to Whiteman Air Force Base, Mo., operational home of the B-2 fleet.

The aircraft lifted off from Air Force Plant 42 here early in the morning on Jan. 26 for its return flight to Whiteman Air Force Base, operational home of the Air Force's 509thBomb Wing and the nation's fleet of B-2s.

"The Spirit of Pennsylvania is the latest B-2 to complete a comprehensive overhaul process called programmed depot maintenance (PDM) that we perform in Palmdale on every B-2 every seven years," said Dave Mazur, vice president of long range strike and B-2 program manager for Northrop Grumman's Aerospace Systems sector. "We've put this national asset back into its optimal form to serve the strategic needs of the country."

The Spirit of Pennsylvania is the first B-2 to be painted with the insignia of the newly formed Global Strike Command, added Mazur. It was also featured in an early 2009 Sports Illustrated photo showing a B-2 flyover of the Rose Bowl football game in Pasadena.

Northrop Grumman is the Air Force's prime contractor for the B-2, the flagship of the nation's long range strike arsenal and the only combat-proven stealth aircraft in the current inventory. Global Strike Command assumed full operational control of the B-2 fleet on Feb 1.

According to Mazur, the programmed depot maintenance process takes approximately 13 months. It includes a complete restoration of the bomber's composite airframe to a "like-new" condition, plus inspections, service and flight testing of all of the aircraft's major mechanical and electrical systems. To date, every B-2 has completed at least one PDM cycle.

The current B-2 fleet comprises 20 aircraft: 19 operational assets plus one flight test aircraft based at Edwards AFB, Calif. that's used to validate software and weapon systems upgrades.

The B-2 Spirit stealth bomber is one of the most survivable aircraft in the world. It is the only aircraft that combines long range, large payload and precision weapons in a single platform, giving it the ability to penetrate deeply into enemy airspace and hold at risk an enemy's most valued assets. It can fly more than 6,000 nautical miles unrefueled and more than 10,000 nautical miles with just one aerial refueling, giving it the ability to reach any point on the globe within hours.

Northrop Grumman Corporation is a leading global security company whose 120,000 employees provide innovative systems, products, and solutions in aerospace, electronics, information systems, shipbuilding and technical services to government and commercial customers worldwide.

CyOptics 500Gbps TOSA/ROSA Sets New Record for Photonic Integration

CyOptics, Inc.

Technology Demonstration Co-Funded Through ATP/NIST Award

Defense News: LEHIGH VALLEY, PA--(Marketwire - 03/22/10) - CyOptics Inc., an industry leader in the design and manufacture of Photonic Integration Circuits, today announced the successful demonstration of an industry first 1/2 Terabit/s (500Gbps) Transmit Optical Subassembly (TOSA) and Receive Optical Subassembly (ROSA) targeted at next generation Ethernet applications. The Photonic Integrated Circuit (PIC) components leverage a combination of monolithic and hybrid integration to deliver 500Gbps in a single pair of TOSA and ROSA.

While the IEEE is expected to ratify a standard for 100G Ethernet by the middle of 2010, initial industry and standard body discussions have already started on how to make the next leap to 1 Terabit to meet the ever-increasing demand for optical bandwidth. The 500G demonstration marks the successful completion of the 2nd year milestone as part of a three-year project funded by the U.S. Commerce Department's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Advanced Technology Program (ATP) to develop the next generation Terabit Photonic Integrated Circuit (TERAPIC™). The final project goal targets the demonstration of optical laser and receiver components for transmission speeds of up to 1 Terabit/s (1,000Gbps) by the end of 2010.

The TOSA encompasses 12 electro-absorptive modulated lasers (EMLs) with wavelength channels from 1270nm to 1380nm on a 10nm channel grid. The lasers are grouped in three (3) arrays with each array monolithically integrating four (4) EMLs. Each EML has a typical small-signal bandwidth of > 30GHz allowing non-return-to-zero (NRZ) operation at 43Gbps. The three EML arrays are flip-chip bonded to a planar lightguide circuit (PLC), which serves as the mounting platform and provides the optical multiplexer (MUX) function. The ROSA couples the signal through an optical PLC-based de-multiplexer (DeMux) to twelve (12) high-speed PIN detectors with a 3dB bandwidth of more than 50GHz and a continuous wave (CW) responsivity of 0.8A/W. The current package dimensions of the TOSA are 22mm x 22mm, and the ROSA 30mm wide x 26mm long. CyOptics leverages its high speed Indium Phosphide (InP) device technology for the fabrication of the cutting edge 40G EML array and 40G PIN detectors, as well as its highly automated hybridization and planar packaging platforms for the assembly of the TERAPIC components. The PLCs for this demonstration used Silicon on Insulator (SOI) technology designed and fabricated by Kotura, CyOptics' partner in the ATP/NIST project. For the future commercialization of the TERAPIC technology, CyOptics intends to also leverage its in-house Silica PLC platform.

The transmission tests were performed over 2km of SMF with each channel tested at 40Gbps. For the demo, a commercial SOA was used in front of the ROSA to boost the signal. Each channel was tested to be error free to <>
