Component Orders Jump in January, Says ECA

Defense News ~ ARLINGTON, Va.--February 11, 2010, (BUSINESS WIRE)--Electronic component orders jumped upward in January according to the monthly report compiled by the Electronic Components Association (ECA). ECA’s monthly report consolidates order information collected in confidence from leading electronic component manufacturers. The upward trend in electronic component orders goes back seven months, but January showed perhaps the biggest jump during that time. Manufacturers are likely reacting to a combination of factors, including internal supply chain intelligence, good demand during the recent holiday season, and positive forecasts from analyst firms such as iSuppli, which predicts a mild recovery for the electronics market this year.
“The industry has seen a decent rebound for more than half a year, and the start of a new year typically leads to optimism,” says Bob Willis, ECA president. “Unlike the market decline we had in 2009, key indicators point to modest growth this year.”

By Bijoy Anandoth Koyitty
Defense News ~ BANGALORE, Feb 11 (Reuters) - FLIR Systems Inc (FLIR.O), which makes thermal-imaging products and infrared cameras, posted a lower quarterly profit and forecast 2010 earnings below analysts' expectations, sending its shares down as much as 8 percent.
The company said it sees slower growth in revenue from government systems in 2010 due to an anticipated decrease in deliveries under the base expeditionary targeting and surveillance sensors-combined (BETTS-C) and related programs.
"The BETTS-C surveillance system was built for Iraq, and right now at least there is not much expectations for a big similar system for Afghanistan. The Iraq system was a meaningful contributor to revenue," Stephens Inc analyst Timothy Quillin told Reuters.
FLIR's government systems segment, which makes imaging products for the military, accounts for more than half of its overall revenue.
FLIR, which competes with defense contractors such as L-3 Communications Holdings (LLL.N), Raytheon Co (RTN.N) and Lockheed Martin Corp (LMT.N), however, said it expects growth from the newly formed commercial vision systems.
"The commercial business will continue to grow nicely and they just need to book new business to replace the drop-off in the defense program," Quillin said.
Revenue from government systems fell 1 percent to $169.7 million in the latest fourth quarter, while the commercial vision systems division revenue rose 34 percent to $57 million. Total revenue rose 3 percent to $311.6 million.
For the fourth quarter, the company reported net earnings of $60.3 million, or 38 cents a share, compared with $65 million, or 41 cents a share, in the year-ago period.
Analysts on average were expecting earnings of 38 cents a share, before items, on revenue of $303.7 million, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
For 2010, the company forecast earnings of $1.48 to $1.53 a share, on revenue of $1.2 billion to $1.3 billion. Analysts were expecting earnings of $1.55 a share, on revenue of $1.22 billion.
The company also said Chief Financial Officer Stephen Bailey will retire at the end of May. Bailey will be succeeded by senior vice-president Anthony Trunzo.
Shares of the company were trading down 7 percent at $27.52 late morning Thursday on Nasdaq.

Iraq seeks return of $900 mln paid for French jets

* Iraq may buy Mirage jets from Dassault
* U.N. sanctions barred arms sales to Baghdad

Defense News ~ BAGHDAD, Feb 11 (Reuters) - Iraq is seeking the return of 651 million euros ($898 million) paid by Saddam Hussein's government for French Mirage fighters that were never delivered because of sanctions, a government spokesman said on Thursday.
Ali al-Dabbagh said talks with France's Dassault Aviation (AVMD.PA) and the French defence ministry for the return of the funds were positive, and Iraq was separately eyeing a possible purchase of an unspecified number of Mirage jets from Dassault.
"We want these funds returned. Simultaneously, we are in negotiations with the French for (the purchase of) Mirage F1s," Dabbagh said, adding that Iraq had not yet decided whether to buy jets from France or the United States.
An Iraqi committee was formed two months ago to negotiate the return of the deposit for jets ordered under Saddam, and Iraq expects the issue to be resolved this year, Dabbagh said.
Sanctions imposed on Iraq shortly after its invasion of Kuwait in 1990 prohibited arms sales to Baghdad, forcing the abandonment of its deal with Dassault for the fighter jets.

Lockheed Martin Delivers 50th Fully Missionized MH-60R Multimission Helicopter to the U.S. Navy

Defense News ~ OWEGO, N.Y., Feb. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) has formally delivered the 50th MH-60R helicopter, fully equipped for its mission to protect the U.S. Navy fleet from hostile submarines and surface ships.
The newest member of the SEAHAWK® family of maritime helicopters is designed and manufactured by Sikorsky, with advanced mission systems integration by Lockheed Martin. "I am extremely proud of the MH-60R team, which has enabled this important milestone in the Romeo's continued introduction to the fleet," said Rear Adm. Steve Eastburg, Program Executive Officer Air ASW, Assault and Special Mission programs. "The enormous multimission capability of this platform continues to be leveraged by the warfighter in new and innovative ways. It is truly a game-changing platform that will deliver powerful capabilities, ranging from low-end to high-end warfare, in the years ahead."
During the February 3 delivery ceremony at Lockheed Martin's Mission Systems & Sensors facility in Owego, NY, Rear Adm. Paul Grosklags, vice commander, Naval Air Systems Command thanked Lockheed Martin and Sikorsky employees and other key suppliers for their contributions to this important program.
"The MH-60R has evolved over 30 years, through lessons learned during developmental testing, fleet deployments and maintenance on these rugged airframes and mission systems, in the harshest maritime environments," said Grosklags. "It stands now as the premier multimission helicopter in operation today. The U.S. Navy is grateful for the tremendous teamwork and experience you bring to deliver this remarkable weapon system."
This week, an aircrew from Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron Seven Zero (HSM-70) will fly the 50th aircraft from the Owego, NY, facility to its new home at the Naval Air Station in Jacksonville, Fla. The aircraft is the 10th MH-60R delivered to HSM-70, which was established in February 2009.
HSM-70 will deploy with 11 MH-60R aircraft aboard the USS George H.W. Bush carrier strike group (CVN 77) in 2011. To date, the U.S. Navy has established and equipped four MH-60R squadrons, with plans to fill out 16 more through the purchase of 300 aircraft.
"The 50th delivery is a great opportunity to reflect on the success of the MH-60R within the fleet, to look forward to the expansion of the MH-60R throughout the helicopter community and to recognize the organizations that have brought this tremendous capability to the Navy," said Captain Dean Peters, the U.S. Navy's MH-60 program manager. "Today, these highly integrated platforms are building a situational awareness picture of the surface and undersea domains that is proving invaluable to fleet operators."
As mission systems integrator for the Sikorsky-built MH-60R, Lockheed Martin is responsible for integrating the helicopter's digital cockpit, a multi-mode radar, acoustic sonar suite, long-range infrared camera and other advanced sensors to detect, identify, track and engage surface and subsurface targets. Lockheed Martin also integrates a self defense system to protect the aircraft from missile threats.
"The highly integrated nature of the Common Cockpitâ„¢ avionics suite and the mission systems allows the aircrew to spend less time interpreting data and more time prosecuting the target," said George Barton, Lockheed Martin's director of Naval Helicopter Programs.
U.S. Navy test squadrons concluded 1900 hours of rigorous MH-60R flight and mission systems evaluations in 2005. Since full rate production began in early 2006, Lockheed Martin and Sikorsky have delivered all MH-60R aircraft to the U.S. Navy ahead of schedule.
The companies expect to deliver up to 27 fully-missionized MH-60R aircraft in calendar year 2010 to the U.S. Navy as part of a five-year contract for 139 MH-60R aircraft through 2013. Extra production capacity exists to deliver an additional 20 aircraft each year for sale by the U.S. Government to international navies.
The U.S. Navy deployed with 11 MH-60R aircraft for the first time from January to July 2009 with the USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) carrier strike group. During exercises in the western Pacific, the MH-60R proved to be an exceptional sub hunter and surface warfare weapons platform, accomplishing a 95 percent sortie completion rate, and showing it can perform utility and search and rescue missions among other secondary missions.
Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin is a global security company that employs about 140,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. The Corporation reported 2009 sales of $45.2 billion.

Ball Aerospace Tests NASA's Landsat Operational Land Imager in Stray Light Test Facility

Defense News ~ BOULDER, Colo., Feb. 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. has successfully completed stray light testing of the Operational Land Imager (OLI) telescope assembly for NASA's Landsat Data Continuity Mission.
(Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20100209/LA51698)
The first of its kind stray light test was conducted at Ball's new Stray Light Test Facility (SLTF) in Boulder, Colorado. Â The OLI instrument will provide 15-meter (49ft.) panchromatic and 30m multi-spectral earth-imaging spatial-resolution capability for the eighth mission in the Landsat satellite series. Control of stray light is critical to the quality of the OLI data product, requiring a level of testing no other earth remote sensing instrument of this caliber has undergone. The test included Point Source Rejection Ratio scans obtained over a wide range of angles and for four telescope configurations: open earth-view port, open and closed solar cal port and aperture shutter closed. Â Demonstrating sensitivity over 10 orders of magnitude, the quality and repeatability of the data proved that the OLI telescope has excellent margin on all on-orbit stray light requirements.
Ball's new SLTF is a Class 5 clean room designed to eliminate undesired sources of background light and to emphasize superior contamination control of the test environment. The double cylindrical chamber reflects the specular light away from the instrument under test. As the facility interior is nearly all black, illumination sources can be either a solar simulator or discrete laser wavelengths collimated into an 18-inch diameter beam. Â The facility is designed to test a wide variety of instruments up to approximately 2 meters per side and weighing up to 1,100 pounds over a wide range of elevation and azimuth angles.
"The universal value of the Landsat program is inestimable," said David L. Taylor, president and CEO of Ball Aerospace. "Testing of OLI in Ball's stray light facility brings us closer to delivering an instrument that will continue NASA's longest continuous imagery data record of our planet."
The Landsat program is a series of Earth-observing satellite missions jointly managed by NASA and the U.S. Geological Survey. For more than 36 years, Landsat satellites have continuously and consistently collected images of Earth, creating a historical archive unmatched in quality, detail, coverage and length. The Ball Aerospace OLI instrument, slated to launch in late 2012, includes a 185km swath allowing the entire globe to be imaged every 16 days. Â The multispectral imagery is gathered for applications that include agricultural monitoring, natural resource management, land-use planning and climate science. Â
Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. supports critical missions of important national agencies such as the Department of Defense, NASA, NOAA and other U.S. government and commercial entities. The company develops and manufactures spacecraft, advanced instruments and sensors, components, data exploitation systems and RF solutions for strategic, tactical and scientific applications. For more information visit http://www.ballaerospace.com/.
Ball Corporation (BLL: NYSE) is a supplier of high-quality metal and plastic packaging for beverage, food and household products customers, and of aerospace and other technologies and services, primarily for the U.S. government. Ball Corporation and its subsidiaries employ more than 14,500 people worldwide and reported 2009 sales of approximately $7.3 billion.

Research and Markets: Military Robots and Unmanned Vehicles Market Shares, Strategies, and Forecasts, Worldwide, 2010 to 2016

Defense News ~ DUBLIN--February 9, 2010, 10:00 am EST (BUSINESS WIRE)--Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/e8461e/military_robots_an) has announced the addition of WinterGreen Research, Inc.'s new report "Military Robots and Unmanned Vehicles Market Shares, Strategies, and Forecasts, Worldwide, 2010 to 2016" to their offering.
This new 2010 study on Military Ground Robots and unmanned vehicles has 513 pages, 190 tables and figures. Worldwide markets are poised to achieve significant growth as the military ground robots and unmanned vehicles are used globally. Growth comes as the nature of combat changes in every region while the globally integrated enterprise replaces nationalistic dominance.
Military robot automation of the defense process is the next wave of military evolution. As automated systems and networking complement the Internet, communication is facilitated on a global basis. The military charter is shifting to providing protection against terrorists and people seek to maintain a safe, mobile, independent lifestyle. Much of the military mission is moving to adopt a police force training mission, seeking to achieve protection of civilian populations on a worldwide basis.
According to Susan Eustis, the lead author of the study, the purchase of Military Robots is dependent on budget constraints. The use of Military Robots is based on providing a robot that is less expensive to put in the field than a trained soldier. That automation of process has appeal to those who run the military.
Robots are automating military ground systems, permitting vital protection of soldiers and people in the field, creating the possibility of reduced fatalities. Mobile robotics operate independently of the operator. The innovation coming from all the vendors is astounding. No one innovation is more significant than another. One vendor, BAE Systems, has an ant-size robot useful for reconnaissance and networking robots in development. As soldiers take up secure positions behind a wall, they deploy a small reconnaissance team. The initial deployment is poised to be a very, very small reconnaissance team. Some hopping, some flying, the stealthy autonomous reconnaissance squad vanishes into a suspicious building for several minutes, then relays the all-clear back to its partners outside when that is the case.
What is good for a robotic unmanned ground vehicle is also good for an ummanned vehicle. Multiple technological, logistical, political and market forces share a quantum singularity that has brought mobile robotics to the point where robots are useful to every arm of the military services. This is a phenomenon that will have a major impact on the way we run the military and police societies. Use of remote-control toys in Iraq started as improvised robots to check out possible roadside bombs. There has since been a flurry of activity on the robotic explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) front since that early beginning. Deliveries of smaller and cheaper Bots are anticipated.
The emergence of a market for intelligent, mobile robots for use in the field and the confined areas of city fighting presents many opportunities. Units used in public spaces and on the battlefield create a better, more flexible, more cost efficient military.
Technology is used to actuate the disparate robot types. Core robotics research and advances in robotic technology can be applied across a variety of robotic form factors and robotic functionality. Advances feed on and off of each other. With each new round of innovation, a type of technological cross pollination occurs that improves existing robotic platforms and opens up other avenues where intelligent mobile robots can be employed, effectively creating new markets.
Roboticists are more advanced in their training and in the tools available to create units. Military robots have evolved from units used in the field to manage different situations that arise. Robots save lives..
Defense security systems have an emphasis on casualty reduction during combat. This has resulted in investment in robotics technology that is useful. Robotic research is on the fast track for government spending. Congress passed a law making it an Army goal that by 2015, one-third of the operational ground combat vehicles are unmanned. The US Navy and Marines have similar initiatives underway.
Military ground robot market forecast analysis indicates that vendor strategy is to pursue developing new applications that leverage leading edge technology. Robot solutions are achieved by leveraging the ability to innovate, to bring products to market quickly. Military purchasing authorities seek to reduce costs through design and outsourcing. Vendor capabilities depend on the ability to commercialize the results of research in order to fund further research. Government funded research is evolving some more ground robot capability.
Markets at $831 million in 2009 are anticipated to reach $9.7 billion by 2016.
Key Topics Covered:

2. Military Ground Robot Market Shares and Forecasts
3. Military Robots Product Description

The joint venture's objective is to be the preeminent supplier of Homeland Security products and services to the flourishing security markets of the Middle East.
DDIT is owned by Sheik Hamad Bin Mohammed Bin Saedan Group, a prominent business group in Saudi Arabia, who following eighty-five years in business, is one of the largest real estate and investment groups in Saudi Arabia, and their holdings extend to the UAE, Tunisia, Egypt, and Jordan.
Sheik Hesham Saedan, managing director of DDIT, stated, "In light of the growing priority for security solutions, ICOP and DDIT see the need for expanding our relationship to integrate additional security products and services, and to leverage the strong brand we have established with ICOP and other security products, in Saudi Arabia and the Region. Through the joint venture with ICOP, we gain an experienced and respected management team, in addition to an ambitious growth plan to become the market-leading security company in the Region."
"Saudi Arabia's fast-growing economy is creating opportunities for both exporters and investors, as it is one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Given the elevated priority that King Abdullah has placed on securing Saudi Arabia's citizens, borders, and critical infrastructure, we believe this is a unique opportunity in history, in helping to meet the security needs of this important market," stated David Owen, Chairman and CEO of ICOP. "Our relationship with DDIT over these past few years has been outstanding, and the growing security market of this Region gives us a sense of urgency to establish this joint venture."
The transaction is subject to final documentation and regulatory approvals. Terms of the transaction, which is projected to close by the end of the last quarter of 2010, were not disclosed, pending finalization through the authorities in Saudi Arabia.

CaseCruzer Deploys New 'Top Kick' GunCruzer KR-20 Case to Combat Terrorism at Home and Abroad

Police and Army weapons carrying case protects against theft and damage
Defense News ~ MONTCLAIR, Calif., Feb. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Shoddy carrying cases often are the reason weaponry for U.S. military and law enforcement personnel are lost, stolen or damaged. Substandard gear harms the mission to stop terrorism. Police and the more than 30,000 troops to be deployed to Afghanistan this year require a rugged, shock proof and reusable transport solution – 'Top kick' in the carrying case chain of command. Therefore, global defense strategists salute the new GunCruzer KR-20 Gun Case created by CaseCruzer.
This nation's Air Combat Command and Air Force officers concur: theft and damage due to subpar transport luggage is a vexing problem. The GunCruzer KR-20 solution leads the way in safety and durability. It deters malicious sabotage and pilfering by meeting stringent, federal and military rifle and pistol luggage regulations that require four padlock flanges for all rifle cases.
The case also is fitted with reinforced hinges, side and front folding handles and wheels for mobility in any terrain. The 45"L x 17"W x 6.38"H inch exterior dimensions of the new wide-body gun case improves previous designs because it can accommodate both popular weapons, such as the M4 or the M16 rifle, as well as many handgun brands and sizes, including the M9 and M11 (or P228).
The GunCruzer KR-20 never loses its head: After throwing the easy-trigger latches, the lid quickly opens but does not tilt back. In fact, it stays upright on its own for unencumbered accessibility. It also is shockproof, watertight and airtight (with an O-ring seal). Each case is reusable and is fitted with an automatic pressure release valve. And when empty it weighs just 20.51 lbs.
The top lid interior of the carrying case is cushioned with convoluted egg-crate style foam. The base of the KR-20 is padded with Polyethylene foam that includes multiple removable plugs for M16 and M4 rifles. And there are cut-outs for seven rifle magazines, accessories, rail-mounted optics and one desiccant.
Three magazine cut-outs for pistols are also included, as well as foam plugs that can snugly hold a long list of large and compact pistols: Beretta M9 (the standard pistol for U.S. Army and Air Force Security Forces); 1911s (Colt, Smith & Wesson, Springfield, Sig Sauer); Sig Sauer models: P226 (in use by U.S. Navy SEALs, Federal agents, and law enforcement agencies), P228 (designated as the M11 by U.S. military); P250 (military, law enforcement, and civilian sportsmen), or P239; H&K USP-Compact .45 Auto; Colt Defender 7000D; XD Tactical Model 5" XD and Sub-Compact 3".
CaseCruzer knows war is hell with faulty equipment. The GunCruzer KR-20 Gun Case was designed to honor the integrity and commitment of the nearly 146,000 U.S. troops now serving in Iraq. And the more than 11,000 soldiers that will rotate in Afghanistan throughout 2010.
In peace or war, think CaseCruzer for 'top kick' travel and a lifetime guarantee.
The CaseCruzer network of companies provides the community with the most comprehensive packaging solutions available on reusable carrying cases for applications such as Communications, Photography, Computers, Electronics, Weapons, Medical, Transportation and other industrial shipping and carrying case uses. Boeing 747-8 Freighter Successfully Completes First Flight

Newest Boeing Freighter Touches Down Safely After 3-Hour, 39-Minute Mission
Defense News ~ EVERETT, Wash., Feb. 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The Boeing (NYSE: BA) 747-8 Freighter successfully took to the sky for the first time today before more than 5,000 employees, customers, suppliers and community leaders. The flight begins a test program for the world's most efficient freighter.
With 747 Chief Pilot Mark Feuerstein and Capt. Tom Imrich in the flight deck, the newest member of the 747 family took off at 12:39 p.m. local time from Paine Field in Everett and landed at Paine Field at 4:18 p.m.
"It was a real privilege to be at the controls of this great airplane on its first flight, representing the thousands of folks who made today possible," said Feuerstein. "The airplane performed as expected and handled just like a 747-400."
Today's flight was the first of more than 1,600 flight hours in the test program for the newest member of the Boeing freighter family. The airplane followed a route over Western Washington, where it underwent tests for basic handling qualities and engine performance. The airplane reached a cruising altitude of 17,000 feet (5,181 m) and a speed of up to 230 knots, or about 264 miles (426 km) per hour.
Powered by four General Electric GEnx-2B engines, the 747-8 Freighter will transition its testing program to Moses Lake, Wash., and Palmdale, Calif., where the other two test airplanes will join it in the coming month.
"This truly is a great day for The Boeing Company and the 747 program," said Mo Yahyavi, 747 program general manager and vice president, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "It's the culmination of the hard work and dedication of our employees, suppliers and customers. While there is still much to do, I am excited to begin the flight-test program, which will demonstrate the capabilities of this airplane."
The 747-8 Freighter is the new, high-capacity 747 that will give cargo operators the lowest operating costs and best economics of any freighter. The airplane is 250 feet, 2 inches (76.3 m) long, which is 18 feet, 4 inches (5.6 m) longer than the 747-400 Freighter. The stretch provides customers with 16 percent more revenue cargo volume compared with its predecessor. That translates to an additional four main-deck pallets and three lower-hold pallets.
"The 747-8 Freighter continues the leadership of the 747 Freighter families, which carries more than half of the world's air freight, making it the standard of the air cargo industry," Yahyavi said.
Boeing launched the airplane on Nov. 14, 2005, with firm orders for 18 747-8 Freighters: 10 from Cargolux of Luxembourg and eight from Nippon Cargo Airlines of Japan. All told, Boeing has secured 108 orders for the 747-8, of which 76 are orders for the new freighter. Cargolux, Nippon Cargo Airlines, AirBridgeCargo Airlines, Atlas Air, Cathay Pacific, Dubai Aerospace Enterprise, Emirates SkyCargo, Guggenheim and Korean Air all have ordered the 747-8 Freighter. FACTBOX-Endeavour to carry final space station hub, cupola

Defense News ~ Feb 6 (Reuters) - Space shuttle Endeavour is set to launch on Sunday on a 13-day mission to deliver a final connecting hub and a viewing port to the International Space Station.
The flight is the 130th for the U.S. space shuttle program, with four more missions remaining before the fleet is retired at the end of this year. Highlights of the mission include:
* Installing Tranquility, the International Space Station's last connecting hub, which will house life support equipment, a toilet and exercise gear to support the live-aboard crew.
The module was built by Franco-Italian group Thales Alenia Space (TCFP.PA)(SIFI.MI).
* Installing what has been called the crowning gem of the orbiting station -- a dome-shaped module with six trapezoidal side windows and a 31.5-inch (80-cm) circular top window, the largest viewing port ever flown in space. The cupola, which also was built by Thales Alenia Space, is intended as a robotics control station and viewing nook.
* Conducting three spacewalks to hook up the new modules. Veteran astronauts Robert Behnken and Nicholas Patrick are paired for all three spacewalks, which will be overseen by crewmate Stephen Robinson from inside the station.
* Delivering new parts for the space station's broken water recycling system, designed to purify urine and other wastewater into potable water for drinking, cooking and other uses.
* Delivering new scientific experiments including a study on the Jatropha curcas plant, used for producing biofuel, to see if its breeding process can be sped up for commercial use.

Wall Street cuts losses, closes up with techs, materials

By Angela Moon
Defense News ~ NEW YORK February 5, 2010, (Reuters) - Stocks erased a midday drop to end slightly higher on Friday, closing out a volatile week punctuated by mixed signals from the labor market data and growing anxiety over fiscal problems in Europe.
Major indexes turned positive heading into the close, as investors scooped up shares in the technology and materials sectors -- two of the worst perforomers during the market's latest pullback.
"It's bargain hunting in an oversold market," said Cleveland Rueckert, market analyst at Birinyi Associates in Stamford, Conneticut. "At least in the short term, selling was overdone."
Earlier, the major indexes dropped more than 1 percent on the initial interpretation that January's payrolls data was another sign of a sluggish job market recovery, and concerns about the euro zone's sovereign debt problems persisted.
U.S. employers unexpectedly cut 20,000 jobs in January, but the unemployment rate dropped to a five-month low of 9.7 percent, the Labor Department reported.
The Dow Jones industrial average (DJI:^DJI - News) closed up 10.05 points, or 0.10 percent, at 10,012.23. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index (^SPX - News) ended up 3.08 points, or 0.29 percent, at 1,066.19. The Nasdaq Composite Index (Nasdaq:^IXIC - News) gained 15.69 points, or 0.74 percent, to close at 2,141.12.
STOCKS' FOURTH WEEKLY SLIDE
For the week, the Dow fell 0.6 percent, the S&P 500 slid 0.7 percent and the Nasdaq lost 0.3 percent, marking their fourth consecutive weekly drop.
With some investors betting that the sell-off of recent days may have run its course, sectors that were beaten down headed higher late in the session.
Cisco Systems (NasdaqGS:CSCO - News) and Intel Corp (NasdaqGS:INTC - News) ranked among the Dow's top advancers, and helped the Nasdaq erase losses. Cisco rose 2.3 percent to close at $23.70 and Intel gained 2.4 percent to end at $19.47.
Materials stocks also rebounded after falling throughout most of the day, with Alcoa Inc (NYSE:AA - News) up 2.1 percent at $13.18.
European policy-makers scrambled to reassure markets about the stability of the 16-nation currency bloc, and Portugal backed a law that may push its swollen deficit higher.
The biggest losers included industrial shares, with General Electric Co (NYSE:GE - News) off 1.6 percent at $15.79 and Boeing Co (NYSE:BA - News) down 1.6 percent at $58.40.
On Thursday, the Dow briefly slipped below the crucial 10,000 mark as stocks suffered their worst daily declines in more than nine months.
Total volume of 12.44 billion shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange, the American Stock Exchange and Nasdaq, well above last year's estimated daily average of 9.65 billion. It was the heaviest trade since Dec 18.
Declining stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the NYSE by a ratio of 17 to 13, while on the Nasdaq, about seven stocks rose for every six that fell.
