Despite the many worthy contenders, the real star of the show was thousands of miles away from South Africa, in an aquarium in Germany.

Yes, that real star is an octopus. Paul, the psychic octopus has attracted a fan club all of his own by correctly predicting the result of all Germany’s games.

Now the world is waiting with bated breath to see if he(psychic octopus Paul) can complete a clean sweep with his predictions that Germany will beat Uruguay for third place and Spain will beat Holand in the final.

According to the CNN, “Paul the octopus has plumped for Spain to beat the Netherlands in Sunday’s World Cup final in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The psychic cephalopod, which is kept at Sea Life in Oberhausen, western Germany, wasted no time in opening the box in his tank labeled with the Spanish flag.

Paul previously predicted the winners of all of Germany’s World Cup matches, creating a huge amount of interest around the world. But this is the first time he has had to choose between two non-German teams.”

The psychic octopus, Paul, has not made a mistake when predicting the outcome of a football match for two years. On that occassion Paul said that, in the Euro 2008 final Germany will beat Spain but Luis Aragones’ team came out on top, winning 1-0.

At this World Cup the psychic octopus Paul has predicted all of Germany’s results correctly. Paul predicted that Germany will be defeated against Serbia in the group stages and Spain in the semi-finals.

So far at this world cup, Paul the octopus has predicted seven out of seven matches right. He has also predicted the final, with Spain becoming world champions.

However the psychic octopus, Paul, has got in support in the unlikely form of Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luiz Rodriguez Zapatero who has joked he will provide Paul with a team of boduguards.

Zapatero said: “I am concerned for the octopus. I am thinking of sending him a protective team.”

Spanish environment and fisheries minister Elena Espinosa has also sworn to protect the octopus.

Here’s how the seer sucker makes his prognostications: Officials put a mussel inside each of two clear plastic boxes bearing the national flags of the teams in his tank. Paul then makes his choice by opening the lid with his tentacles and devouring one of the treats.
